Introducing the IKON V185KBJ - Built for Keith. Available to You.
After years of creating with his trusted IKON V46, master potter Keith approached us with a new challenge: to craft a kiln big enough, powerful enough, and refined enough to support him with his future plans.
The result? The IKON V185KBJ - a truly efficient powerhouse of precision and performance which Keith is absolutely loving, “The results are fantastic, I have been firing a glaze that is particularly temp sensitive and it is spot on!".
And after many happy firings with Keith, we are super exited to say that we are bringing model to the masses and if you like what you see you can now get this kiln for yourself and fire like Keith!
At 185 litres, it proudly takes the crown as the largest IKON made to date, clearly surpassing the IKON V100. Designed with the sane build quality, energy efficiency, and reliability that famously define every Kilncare kiln, the V185KBJ combines impressive capacity with the IKON’s signature craftsmanship. And because it was made especially for Keith, he gets to boast his initials on the name of this model.

Now compatible with solar energy, Kilncare kilns are ready to be fired solar.
Up until recently, firing kilns backed by solar power has been pretty wasteful and inefficient. Conventional kiln controllers regulate temperature by rapidly switching the heating elements on and off (often multiple times per minute). This fast cycling keeps the kiln stable, but it also causes your photovoltaic system to see sudden, irregular demand spikes. Since solar power generation is smoother and slower to react, this mismatch can lead to wasted solar energy and unnecessary grid draw.
However, with our new photovoltaics-optimized control systems we can adapt the switching cycles. Instead of very short on/off bursts, the controller extends the intervals so the kiln’s power draw matches the slower rhythm of your solar production. That way, the kiln “breathes” in sync with your PV system, maximizing self-consumption of solar electricity and reducing grid reliance.
You don’t need a new kiln either; old and new kilns can now be fired solar!
Because all that is required is a controller update or replacement, any of our kilns can be made ready to be solar fired. This means you don’t need to invest in an entirely new kiln to benefit from solar integration. By simply upgrading or swapping the controller, your existing equipment can be adapted to run in harmony with photovoltaic systems, giving you the flexibility to reduce grid reliance, lower energy costs, and make your kiln more sustainable.

I fired up the kiln again last night with my first glaze fire. I’ve had two very successful bisque fires now so am loving my new Ikon v61x.
Firing glaze versus bisque is a bit (LOT) more logistically complicated. I need to find ways to fire more little things at the same time - I’m going to have to put my thinking cap on!
Given it’s my first glaze fire and I hear so many horror stories / warnings about dripping/sticking to the shelf etc, I’m a bit anxious about the result today ! Fingers crossed Mildred-the-kiln-goddess is overseeing things properly.
Noting everything down as well to ensure I remember what works and what doesn’t. Thanks @karaleighceramics .

There’s nothing more magical than putting on a successful bisque kiln….. well maybe a good glaze kiln!
Join us for a class and let’s get making !
Unloading the kiln in under a minute 🏺🔥🏺🔥 of course it took a little longer in practice. I'm so excited to get these goodies glazed and back in the kiln for their second firing. Which one is your favourite?

Firstly I must apologise for the pretty terrible videography- I really must learn how to “show” you things and not hide them off camera!
I won’t enthuse forever - just to say: I am so so happy with my first bisque firing. I feel blessed. There were no casualties in the kiln (thank you Mildred, my kiln goddess, for keeping a watchful eye over proceedings!) and some of my experiments with coloured slip sgraffito came out really well. The mishima and slip trailing may require a bit more practice!
Now there is going to be the not so insignificant challenge of glazing everything - or rather deciding how to glaze everything and then doing my first glaze fire - another heart stopper!

It's Firing Friday wohoo! The kiln is stacked .. full to the brim of exciting pieces! If all goes well, this lovely lot will be coming to @drawncollective in April, and @shropshiregrowthhub Artisan Showcase in May!
If you've got a minute, I'd be grateful if you dropped a little prayer to the kiln Gods in the comments for me 🙏🤲💖
