We are joint Orchestra of the Year 2025! Every day working with the Meininger Hofkapelle is an inspiration, because they take on every challenge with such passion and enthusiasm, and this past season has been filled with highlights—Don Carlos, Ethel Smyth’s The Wreckers, and Tristan and Isolde, among many others. I couldn’t be more proud that their achievements have been recognised this year by @opernwelt_magazin . At the end of the 19th century the Meininger Hofkapelle was regarded as one of the most important orchestras in Germany, working with Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, and Max Reger, to name just a few of the luminaries who came to Meiningen during this time. With this award from Opernwelt, the musicians of the Hofkapelle have shown once more that their achievements are worthy of national and international recognition. We have also been jointly awarded the prize for ‘Rediscovery of the Year’ for our production of Ethel Smyth’s ‘The Wreckers’. I can only hope that this piece will continue to be performed and take its rightful place in the operatic canon!

Wir blicken zurück auf ein besonderes Gesprächskonzert zum Abschluss und Höhepunkt unserer Lohengrin-Feierlichkeiten zum 175. Uraufführungsjubiläum. Das bereits eingespielte Team, Killian Farrell (GMD Staatstheater Meiningen) und Tom Adler (wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter des Hauses), durchschritten Wagners abendfüllenden Lohengrin in nur 90 Minuten: Den Brautchor absolvierten sie vierhändig am Klavier, sangen gemeinsam das Liebesduett aus dem dritten Akt und analysierten, sich die Bälle zuwerfend, Musik, Text und Regieanweisungen des Lohengrin. Der Saal war bis auf den letzten Platz belegt, die über 100 Gäste spendeten herzlichen Applaus, der zur Fortsetzung auffordert. I am incredibly excited to start my new journey as GMD at the Staatstheater Nürnberg @staatstheaternuernberg from the season 2027/28 onwards! I feel particularly privileged to be leading the Staatsphilharmonie at such an important time of transition, as we relocate to the Kongresshalle, with all of the challenges and opportunities that poses. Until then, I look forward to continuing my work in Meiningen @staatstheatermeiningen , where the coming season brings productions of Cardillac, Rheingold, Otello, and many more.

My second season at @staatstheatermeiningen has come to an end, after four new productions, two revivals, six symphony concerts, concerts for Christmas and New Year's... A wonderfully busy and fulfilling season. Here are just a few highlights from the past year: 1) Our production of Don Carlos directed by Achim Freyer 2) A rediscovery of Ethel Smyth’s operatic masterpiece, The Wreckers 3) Perhaps the most personally satisfying for me, our production of Tristan und Isolde directed by @verenastoiber , with a fantastic cast 4) A concert performance of Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, with the combined forces of the Meininger Hofkapelle and the Meininger Opernchor onstage. It was a particular joy to collaborate on a concert project with our inspiring choir director, @romanrothenaicher 5) Hinrich Horstkotte’s evocative and brilliantly inspired production of Don Giovanni 6) A New Year’s concert dedicated to the great American musicals of the 40s and 50s, with Kelsey Lauritano and Mark Hightower I am so grateful to work with the musicians of the Meininger Hofkapelle, who play every performance with the utmost seriousness and dedication, as well as our wonderful ensemble of soloists. Two years have flown by, and I can't wait to see what the next two years have in store!

„Kunst zerstört das Schweigen“ D. Schostakowitsch Heute vor einer Woche durfte ich mit GMD Killian Farrell (@killian_farrell ) ein besonderes Gesprächskonzert zu Schostakowitschs 1. Cellokonzert und seiner 10. Sinfonie am Staatstheater Meiningen (@staatstheatermeiningen ) geben. Gemeinsam mit dem Publikum, das größtenteils das politische Klima der Sowjetunion aus eigener DDR-Biografie nachspüren konnte, sprachen wir über Doppelbödigkeit in Schostakowitschs Werken, über Ironie, Satire und das Groteske in seiner Musik und seine grundhumanistische Haltung in einer Diktatur. Über 100 Minuten dauerte die Einführung für das heutige Sinfoniekonzert der Meininger Hofkapelle. Ich bin sehr dankbar für die Einladung, diesen besonderen Abend, den intensiven Austausch mit meinem Partner in crime Killian Farrell und für die Gespräche mit dem Publikum, die zeigen, wie bedeutsam Schostakowitschs Wirken auch 50 Jahre nach seinem Tod ist. TOI TOI TOI für das heutige Konzert nach Meiningen!
