I’m not a stay at home mom, but I’m an appreciator of all women/ mothers, so what has been on my mind for some time now: STAY AT HOME MOTHERS WORK JUST AS HARD AS WORKING MOTHERS DO.
The only difference between a corporate woman and a stay at home mom is visibility and quantification.
One of the biggest lies women are told is that ambition makes us less maternal and “staying at home” full time makes us less ambitious. We quantify billable hours, revenue, headcount, deliverables, and household budgets. But when it comes to domestic labor, suddenly everyone wants vibes.
That is why the language of “help” is so intellectually unserious to me. Cooking, planning, remembering, scheduling, buying, cleaning, emotional tracking, and child logistics are not feminine energies. They are management functions. If a woman stops doing them, the household either deteriorates or the market sends you an invoice. Which means the work had value all along. What it lacks is recognition.
Help would be materializing conduits for women to explore their dreams, irrespective of whether they are mothers/ have domestic duties. Help would also look like allyship to consider relief for single mothers who MUST carry both roles so can’t even comfortably have this conversation. Help acknowledges that motherhood does not erase ambition.. It simply reveals whose labor gets romanticized and whose gets rewarded.
You do not correct chronic imbalance by pretending the work is too loving to count. You count it so you can see it. You see it so you can value it.
You value it so you can redistribute it.
That is not anti family. It is the first honest conversation many families refuse to have.
If this is something that you are currently dealing with- I see you, sis. I’m here with you. I value you. It will be okay- your work does not go unnoticed (in the boardroom OR at home).
