HOW TO DESIGN A HOUSE ON A TRICKY SITE? . JUPITER HOUSE balances ocean views and solar gains with a split pavilion design. . Sometimes views and aspects aren’t in the right direction. This site presented a tricky start point for the new design. View sharing with neighbours needed to be maintained while utilizing the existing driveway and site excavation of the old beach house. This on top of the problem to capture the south eastern ocean views and balance solar gains from the opposite direction. . The resulting layout and split pavilion design is in response to these design challenges and achieves 7 NatHERS stars. After 18 months on the shelf, JUPITER HOUSE is back on the drawing board! Working with new property owners we’ve made small revisions to wet areas to suit their family needs and reworked the exterior materials. We’ve checked the homes energy performance and NatHERS rating using @powerhausengineering dashboard. A fantastic site with views in the wrong direction (SE) we are still able to balance glazing and solar gains to achieve the minimum 7 stars. We are looking into the effectiveness of building airtight (Passivehaus) to bump the performance to 8.2 stars! We’ve also been able to check that with only a 5kw solar system, the all electric home (that’s heat pump hot water system, electric cooktop and over, split system aircon for heating and cooling) is NET ZERO 12 months of the year, not bad 🤓 #kibbindesignstudio #house #highperforminghomes #design #beachhouse
