"Great wines are made in the vineyard. Every vintage leaves clues, patterns hidden in the vines waiting to be understood." For Kiara Scott Farmer, Cellar Master at Hazendal, harvest is a season defined by movement and meaning. It represents the culmination of months shaped by sun, rain and wind, and reflects the commitment of a team who tend the vineyards by hand throughout the year, from pruning to the careful selection of each bunch. Working with just twelve hectares of prime viticultural land, Kiara draws inspiration from a site enriched by three distinct soil types of weathered granite, quartz and shale. The unique coastal influence brings a natural cooling that encourages an elegance that is deeply characteristic of Hazendal’s wines. Each vintage offers a fleeting moment in time, an opportunity to capture the essence of place and climate with honesty and intention. Kiara's winemaking style is rooted in balance and integrity. She enjoys exploring techniques that showcase the natural character of the fruit while preserving its clarity. This philosophy guides her minimal intervention approach which allows the wines to express their terroir with purity and authenticity.

🍷 Kiara Scott Farmer, Cellar Master at Hazendal Wine Estate. “My heritage drives me to honour the resilience and creativity of my community by creating wines that are authentic and innovative, and bridging tradition with a more inclusive, forward-thinking future.” Kiara Scott Farmer brings technical precision, creative vision, and a philosophy of crafting terroir-driven wines to her role as Cellar Master at Hazendal Wine Estate. Her winemaking ethos holds a deep interest in how the creation of wine involves a balance between science, creativity, and storytelling. “At its core, winemaking is an artistic endeavour; creating something that reflects a sense of place and culture.” A graduate of the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme, Kiara gained international experience in Rhône Valley, Sancerre and Russian River Valley, California. In 2024, she became the first female winemaker of colour to receive South Africa’s Diners Club Winemaker of the Year award. At Hazendal Wine Estate, Kiara champions a philosophy of minimal intervention, crafting distinctive and thoughtfully made wines designed to spark cultural conversation.

There’s just something about the entrance to this old fortified city, sitting at the top of a hill in Evora. Feeling a little nostalgic - take me back.

#Repost @jemma.styer • • • • • • Feeling so blessed and energized today after meeting the super talented @kiarascott05 , the new winemaker for @brookdale_estate_sa . So inspiring to meet another female who feels so passionate about what she does and is so excited to take on the world 🙌🏼 The second photo is basically me trying to pay attention to the conversation whilst her and Kat nerd out about the technical stuff, but in reality I was just mesmerized by this marvelous energy in front of me 😂 #sommlife #southafricanwomen #womenempoweringwomen #southafricanwine #sommelier #wine #womeninwine #womeninbusiness #womenwhohustle #winetasting #winelovers
