i am thankful for every decision in the last 100 years that put me here, on this earth, in this timeline on this path to being exactly who and what i need to be. it’s because my grandmother, Jeannie, lived in St.Augustine where she had my mother, Kesha, who then moved to Orlando and had me who then grew up and left to North Florida, that i can say to you all today that i’m writing my first cookbook — Cooking with Florida Water (Recipes, Stories & History of the Unsung South). CWFW is an act of cultural preservation and resistance. It’s a love song. It’s an honest look at a complicated state. It’s a return home. big swamp water kisses to everyone involved from the start of my proposal. thank you @foreverbeard for seeing me. thank you @nicoletourtelot for being patient with me. i wish everyone had a nicole. i’m eager to make a book no one has ever seen before. someone tell 20 year old Kia that it’ll all be worth it. Florida foreverrrrrrr 🐊🍊

Gullah Country ends not in the Carolinas or Georgia, but in St. Augustine — a small coastal town in northeast Florida. My Great Grandmother Zona was born and laid to rest there. My late Grandmother Jeannie was born and laid to rest there. I miss her more than I can bear sometimes. My mommy has vibrant memories of adventuring through the woods, picking berries and getting her first bike stolen. I see all of these women when I look at myself. I feel fortunate to begin this journey as a stewardess of Floridian history. Thank you @hello.sola for bringing my illustrated vision of my headshot to life. Im so in awe of you.

📍Gullah Grub, 877 Sea Island Pkwy, St Helena Island, SC 29920 What do you know about Gullah Geechee food and culture? Chances are, not nearly enough! This should be one of your first stops when trailing Black Foodways on the east coast. So many roads lead back to the Low Country 🦐 #seaisland #gullahgeechee #southcarolina #florida #staugustinefl

“I HATE BOILED PEANUTS” — me when I tell an insane lie. Boiled peanuts, the crown jewel of the South. I think I converted @jakestavis . Quick, what’s your favorite flavor? 🤔🤨🥜 #florida #boiledpeanuts #floridalife #southerncooking

pretending I’m at a Korean convenience store, but it’s a Food Lion in the South Carolina. Haven’t done one of these in a long time aha, I love this silly little series. Where should I head next? Piggly Wiggly? Harris Teeter? #koreanconveniencestore #aesthetic #southern

look mom, I’m in The New Yorker! Y’all knew that, but seeing it in print hits different 🫡. None of this would be possible without @hannahgoldfield 🫂. This story has reached so many Floridians. Frankly, I was surprised. I joke about Floridians being everywhere, even in the shadows, but I’ve been solitary in my work for so long that I forgot. Because of this article, I’ve made new connections with people just as passionate about our state as I. For that, I’m deeply grateful. Fellow writers, chefs, bookstore owners, farmers, environmentalists, and Wawa Stans — all of yall ended up in my corner of the internet. Thank you. Truly! Comment your zip code on your way out and remember to keep Florida weird 🐊🍊 #florida #floridalife #407 #orlando #southerncooking
