Happy 100th Birthday, Mr. Gantt!!! ❤️ As I worked today, making a replica of one of his lanterns, in fact, so many sweet memories and thoughts that just made my heart full of thankfulness came flooding in… You’d be hard pressed to find a more generous person than Mr.Gantt. Maybe not when it came to subjecting him to music that he wasn’t fond of (and there’s a story around that that many of the older crafts people in town know and love to tell), but certainly when it came to his time, his skills, his art and craft, his cooking, and his ability to make you feel honored and welcome. I never saw him too busy to stop, sit down, and have a good conversation with anyone who took time to come and see him. And maker of a darn good tomato sandwich! I am in awe of God’s generosity to us, actually, in leading our path across his and letting us run parallel for a little while. Those years with him changed my whole family’s life, and all the while he was just being him and doing what he loved. So here’s to you, Mr. Gantt! You left us in 2010, but you left your fingerprints all over Charleston. She would not be anywhere near as charming and lovely without your love for her! Your lanterns are still burning bright!

Back at home, we study the photos and measurements we took and begin to draw. In this case, the architects had a basic lantern shape in mind; so taking that shape, we sketched this for the front entry lanterns that will flank the door, tying in the scallop detail from the surround.

13 East Battery. The first meeting is always the “inspiration” stage, where we get our bearings and familiarize ourselves with the architecture. As we walked around the home and took measurements of the areas where the lanterns will be installed, we took note of the details unique to this house; the ones that make it stand out from the others on the street. Deeply carved scallops and palm fronds in the entry surround caught our eye.

My entire life, 13 East Battery has been the purple house with the uncovered upper porch. My childhood self used to imagine that the owners must love to sunbathe while they watched the boats sail by 😂. Little did I know that this Greek Revival originally had an upper portico complete with massive brownstone Corinthian columns (see 2nd slide) that met their fate during the earthquake of 1886. The porch roof and columns tumbled down in the destruction and landed in the street below. The top of a column was salvaged by the family and set in the garden where it remained all these years as a decorative reminder of the home’s former grandeur, but the portico itself was not rebuilt… until now. And we are beyond grateful to have been brought in to design and make the exterior lighting for such a prominent home in our city. So we’ve decided to share some behind the scenes looks at our process on this one. Follow along to see what it takes to craft bespoke light fixtures for a unique historic home like the William Ravenel! And turns out, it wasn’t sunbathing the family was up to on that porch - Mr. Ravenel was a shipping merchant and loved to watch his fleet sail in and out of the harbor. 🚢

Last year wrapped up a special project for a beloved family home in historic downtown Charleston. Brought in by @taylorhillinteriordesign and @gochnauerconstruction we were commissioned to design with the request that these lights somehow point the viewer to Christ through symbolic elements. What a joy!!! With three differing designs, we were able to incorporate on all a repeating motif of angel wings and olive leaves, symbols that remind us of the moments in history when God announced His peace towards us, once by a dove with an olive branch in her mouth preceding the foreshadowing bow that pointed towards heaven instead of earth, and the night that angels broke through the sky and gave shepherds in the fields a commission of their own- to find the baby, the Savior Messiah, in a rather odd place - a feeding trough. There were 25 in total, so plenty more pics to come. These are the “pockets” to flank the doorways.
