The freshly formed papers are now layered between sheets of woollen felt. Here some of the extra-large sheets are being carefully loaded into the hydraulic press to remove the excess water from the paper.

And from pulp to fully formed sheet in under 90 seconds (for this size at least!) - the next stage is to press them between felts to remove the excess water before hanging them up to dry naturally. It takes considerable skill to produce paper like this and it was a pleasure to watch it being done first-hand.

After pulping, the cotton fibres suspended in water are poured onto a paper mould which is a handheld wooden frame with a stainless-steel wire mesh draining surface. The characteristic deckle edges of the sheet of paper come from the slippage of pulp between the deckle and the mould.

Here cotton rags are being pulped in a Hollander beater. A neutral pH internal sizing agent is added at this stage. Our cotton rag papers are the only handmade papers in India made with neutral pH size and so they are the only ones that are genuinely acid free.

As we await the arrival of our latest shipment from India (current ETA is 31st October)..
Here is where it all begins; raw cotton from the cotton market. This raw cotton is used for a variety of textiles, in fabrics, clothing and furnishings. The cotton rag we use is recycled from T-shirt cuttings, a reliable source of pure woven cotton.
It is the fibre length of this raw material that gives Khadi rag papers their exceptional strength and durability.

There's lots more of our very popular Square papers due to arrive in our next shipment - the Square paper packs are available in 30cm x 30cm and 20cm x 20cm sizes. 320gsm with a medium/rough surface these sheets are internally and externally sized for a variety of water-based mediums. You can use oils on them too of course, but we would recommend using an acrylic primer or coat of gesso first.
Our shipment is currently due around the 25th October but we will keep you all posted.
