Are you still painting your root tone around the hairline the same as the rest of your the head?? STOP 🛑
Painting a shade that’s 1/3 shades lighter will not not soften the grow out but it’s also a life saver for those clients wanting a subtle face frame whose hair can’t stand bleach.
Top tips::
1️⃣ For level 7 root tints, opt for a level 9 hairline.
2️⃣ For 6 and darker start with 1 shade lighter and gradually build up to 2/3 shades over time to avoid lines of demarcation.
3️⃣ Paint the hairline towards the face and direct the rest of the global root back for a stronger contrast of blend your last section together for more subtle shades.

THE HILL I WILL DIE ON!!!!
This wonderful industry needs a reality check. The boots on the ground stylists, self employed or salon owners with teams NEED a shake up.
We are not taught how to put together a dynamic pricing structure that works for our salons early enough in our training and this is what’s lead to such dramatic discrepancy in how to charge for services and what we deem an acceptable wage to take home or pricing for profit to grow our businesses.
The subject of pricing, consultation, customer services and marketing NEEDS to be spoken about right at the start of your training and not left as an afterthought once you’re qualified.
I will always be transparent about how I price my services and I am here to help anyone who asks for it.

As much as I harp on about pricing, numbers, and knowing what’s coming into your business and what’s going out… THIS is the reason why.
Our clients.
Making them feel and look a million dollars. Seeing the joy on their face when you turn that mirror around and show them what you’ve created.
Never forget—these people in our chairs are what make this job what it is. Without them, we are nothing.
A strong pricing strategy and solid business knowledge are essential… but what should always come first is the trust these incredible people place in us, day in, day out.

I’m not here to make anyone feel inadequate or to call out brands for the cost of product. I’m here to speak up and be the voice of all those ridiculously talented hairdressers out there who are massively under selling themselves for fear of losing clients, upsetting people with a much needed price increase or even, god forbid wanting to pay themselves a wage that warrants their skill set.
I’m here to be the reality check we need for salon owners not paying staff what they deserve because their numbers don’t add up because there’s no pricing strategy or the salon owners that walk away empty handed at the end of the month because they are incredible leaders and supporting their team financially but there’s sod all left for them at the end of it.
This industry needs a shake up, we need to admit there’s a fundamental problem with pricing and our self worth because it’s not properly taught. We’d like to share a little update with you ✨
After a wonderful time in our current salon, we’ve made the decision to move on to a new space.
We want to reassure all of our amazing clients that we are still very much here for you and will be staying within Prestwich. It’s important to us that we continue to provide the same level of care and service you know and trust.
For now, it’s business as usual, all appointments and bookings will continue as normal while we find the perfect new home for the salon.
We’re really looking forward to this next chapter and will share more details with you as soon as we can.

If you’ve never properly broken down your costs for a full head colour like this….. chances are you’re undercharging AND losing money.
You’re covering SOME costs and donating your time.
£42.75 just in colour.
Before gloves, foil, shampoo, conditioner, electricity, rent, insurance….
Before your 45 minute application time.
Before the 3.5 hours you’ve blocked out…
Before your skill, experience, your decision making.
And I’d put money on it before you’re paid yourself. 🤔
🛑 This industry has normalised undercharging to the point where hard working stylists are fully booked and still broke.
✋🏻 Busy doesn’t mean profitable.
So ask yourself honestly - WHAT are you actually charging for?
💾 Save this for next time you feel “too expensive” and send it to a hairdresser friend who needs this reality check and to remember they ARE worth it.

No talk about pricing today, just a pure celebration of Erin and her beautiful family in her wedding day.
It’s always an honour to be asked to look after a bride on her wedding morning but this one was just a bit special.
I first met Erin in 2020 after a dodgy home bleach job (we still laugh about the level of orange we had to deal with) and she’s been with me ever since.
College, Uni and now her wedding day, I’ve styled hair for all of it.

I’ve been banging on about pricing and knowing your numbers based on your overheads but you should all be factoring in your skill and this should be reflected when you’re working out your salary.
You can get a job working on a checkout for £15 per hour these days and I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that, but if you’re paying yourself less than this per hour as a trained professional then there is a problem.

RESISTANT ROOTS
Let’s get down to it shall we.
Whether you agree with me or not, your resistant root appointments cost more than a standard one and you should be charging accordingly.
Resistant root formulation requires more tint to less developer. We can talk about the why behind that in another post and go down the whole rabbit hole of the Ph of a tube of tint against that or a bottle of developer but the main topic here is that if you’re mixing 90ml of tint to 72ml of developer for an 8 week root appointment, it’s costing you £16.20 in tint alone based on a 60ml tube of colour costing £10.80.
Times that by the amount of clients you currently have on your books for root tints and that is A LOT of profit down the drain.
Knowing what your services cost will inevitably save you money AND you’ll start to see the benefit immediately.

IT DIDN’T HAPPEN OVER NIGHT!!
And I can assure you that it’s been HARD GRAFT.
I’ve had to get uncomfortable in order to step out of that comfort zone. I’ve lost sleep, lost clients, lost hair 🤣 and gained a fair few grey ones in their place but let me tell you something,
I have never once looked back and I had never been scared of pivoting when it’s been needed.
I will be forever grateful for the be people who stuck around for ride and the ones who have joined along the way. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have a business or any sanity left for that matter.
Growth and change only happen when you make the leap.
I’m here to hand hold and offer advice to anyone who needs or wants it.
The only way this industry will ever change is if we start working together rather than against.
