I met Caroline in 2009 as we gathered in Santa Barbara for a dear friend, Kevin, who was in his last days of cancer. Kevin Brown was my climbing partner for 20 years and brought me into the world of big wall El Capitan first ascents in Yosemite and epic climbs in Joshua Tree. Kevin was an athletic trainer working with pro athletes and Olympians. Caroline was a teenager at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano and went on to the 2002 and 2006 Oympics when she blew out her femur and knee in a training run. Kevin helped her heal. I shot some portraits of Caroline in SB and a few years later she reached out to ask if I would photograph her wedding to Nelson, an olympic medalist. Of course I said yes..although I really am not a wedding photographer. It was magical at a big ranch in Steamboat Springs with many other Olympians and US Ski Team athletes. A year later I went back to Steamboat Springs to photograph the US Ski Team and aspiring skiers. I vividly remember all the olympic banners hanging in the cafeteria at the base of the mountain and feeling the passion of the young skiers as I spent an exciting week on the slopes shooting with them.

Catherine came down to Austin this summer to celebrate her 60th with a photoshoot - and more importantly to to be at ease at letting go at the age of 60, nude in front of the camera and loving it. This was our second day shooting - the prior day was in studio - and we were up pre-dawn to get the morning light at Bull Creek. Jess who handled hair and make up the day before wouldn’t have been surprised at how Catherine just let go, sliding down a waterfall at sunrise and just saying f*ck the hair. #attidude
