Slooooow boat on the Mekong during burning season. The air is suffocating. The sun is squeezed out. The silence is rumbling, engine churning on. Chatter, snoring, gambling, daydreaming, sipping, sweating, time slips by… as we slide into Laos.

Part 2 of “Just Wow” just had to wait! …
Phnom Penh… 17 April 1975… The Khmer Rouge “free” the capital and take power. The brand new regime of “Democratic” Kampuchea is welcome with cheers and open arms.
But the dream quickly turns to nightmare. The regime is suspicious of everyone. 3 million perished, tortured, hungered, dead of forced labour… Visiting a primary school that had been turned into one of almost 200 prisons was one of the most chilling and humbling experience. Some wise person once said “We learn from history that we learn nothing from history”. How I hope that this will one day change!

Just wow! (Part 1)
The Khmer civilisation also known as the Angkor Empire, centred in what is now known as Cambodia, flourished from 803 AC over the course of 6 centuries and extended over a territory larger than Western Europe. Renowned for their impressive architectural skills and advanced engineering capabilities with their road, canal and bridge networks, the Khmers’ influence stretched to parts of modern-day Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

The weather turned (Part 4) …
For those like the Badjao who mostly live near the coast crammed on small boats or in overpopulated makeshift stilt houses, surviving storms is a way of life. “Sea Gypsies” as they are also known are not always welcome on the coasts of the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia … and so surviving destructive police raids is also a way of life.
Entire Badjao villages can disappear overnight. It was the case of the one we visited with @luisito1027 and @lensnt8

The weather turned (Part 3) …
Thunder rumbled closer. Darkness engulfed the skies behind, closing in fast. The boatsman squeezed the accelerator, the hull beating the restless waves. Others sped past us also heading for safety. Then all hell broke loose …
At this time of year, it is not uncommon for heavy rains to last 3 days with only short breaks … We with @luisito1027@lensnt8 were drenched.
