Just a little glimpse of what was a night of my dreams—the opening of my first curated exhibition, “South America/American South” last Thursday night on April 16. A presentation honoring mine and the artist’s shown Brazilian (and Texas!) heritage/roots. A very special day because of this show, but also on what would have been my Dad’s 70th birthday. We laughed, we cried, we celebrated.
Thank you to the incredible artists: Matheus, Daniela (who couldn’t be there and was so missed!), Natália, and Victor—whose works captivated us and transported us to Brazil. To Peeler, for believing in me and for making this possible in his beautiful gallery. And to my Mom, Sandra, who drove from Shreveport and who I owe my Carioca lineage to. Thank you to all who came to support us. It truly means the world.

French-American artist Jean Despujols (1886–1965) was born on this day in Bordeaux. I wrote my master’s thesis on the artist in 2021 and along with Dr. Dana Kress of Centenary College, I’m one of the main scholars and experts on the him. Although fairly unknown, his life was incredibly interesting and he died in my hometown of Shreveport. He was a talented painter, poet, philosopher, writer, and composer—a true renaissance man. Despite his ties to France and Louisiana, he is likely best known for his paintings, sketches, and watercolors from his two-year trip to French Indochina in 1936–1938. Over 350 artworks from that trip are housed at the Meadows Museum (@meadowsmuseum ) in Shreveport, Louisiana. Depicted here is a self-portrait from his journey in the lush countryside of Vietnam. If you’re interested in learning more, check out my thesis at the link in my bio.
Officially announcing my curatorial debut: “South America/American South,” on view next month, April 16–May 16, at J. Peeler Howell Fine Art in Fort Worth, Texas.
Curated by Brazilian-American art historian Kelly M. Ward, “South America/American South” is a thematic exhibition featuring painting, sculpture, and photography by Matheus DeSiqueira, Daniela Flint, Natália Mott, and Victor Vasconcelos—four artists of Brazilian descent with ties to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Themes of the exhibition are of cultural identity and duality, yearning and nostalgia (saudades), personal reflection, and aspects of how the idea of home, relocation, and belonging are explored and defined by the millennial artists and curator.
It would mean the world if you join us on my late father’s birthday, Thursday, April 16 from 6–8 pm for a lively, free opening reception with quintessential Brazilian drinks, bites, and vibes. To close the artful weekend in DFW, join us for an artist talk on Sunday, April 19 from 2–3 pm. Incredibly honored, grateful, and humbled to represent my heritage and showcase these talented artists at Peeler’s beautiful gallery.
Drove over to Dallas last night to see @artworkbymadelyn ’s stunning painting “Light Bearer” as part of “Mothering,” a thematic group exhibition on motherhood at @erincluleygallery .
I absolutely love Madelyn’s work and first stumbled upon her paintings at the @lsumoa in graduate school when I worked as a collections intern eight years ago. Little did I know I would be in the DFW metroplex with her at the same time years later! She is now based out of Seattle, WA but still represented by Erin Cluley Gallery. Maybe one day our paths will cross for me to finally express my admiration for her practice in person, but for now a solely devoted Instagram post will have to do❤️
