Costa Rica Vol 002 -Community
I’ve had a year full of accomplishments, but this trip was the biggest takeaway of 2025. Coming into ‘26, I am in a deeply reflective state. I’ve been to Costa Rica before to do research for MSU, but I’ve never been tasked to create curriculum and programming. My classmates and I arrived anxious, excited, and curious, while facing limited power, no hot water, little connectivity, and a language barrier. Despite moments of alienation, we showed up, built community, and pushed through because the work was bigger than us.
Art and food became what united us. In leaving, I feel restored and deeply appreciative. I’m grateful for the talented young people I worked alongside and the care and culture of the San Luis community, I hope to see you all soon. You have made a friend in me🙏🏽
We are also in the process of creating an art scholarship through MSU for local youth, as art education is nearly nonexistent. If you’re interested in making a change, stay posted
[just vibe and chill, thank you all if you watch it fully]🙏🏽

What is Black in Yellow? Black in Yellow is a photo series of Black men in color, with yellow as a central tone. As Black history comes to an end, I wanted to compose a body of work. Yellow traditionally symbolizes warmth, light, optimism, clarity, and visibility. It is the color of the sun, of energy, of presence. Often described as soft and inviting, yellow reframes Black men in a light that directly contrasts the harsh, aggressive stereotypes America projects onto us.
The work critiques those narratives while highlighting how color enhances, not defines, our presence and beauty. By placing Black men in yellow, the series emphasizes warmth, emotional depth, and radiance rather than fear or intimidation.
The project is also paired with black-and-white images, engaging the idea of timelessness. Black-and-white photography has long been used to make subjects feel historic and enduring, and here it reinforces that Black culture is timeless, especially in America, where it is often borrowed, replicated, and monetized more than it is celebrated.
This series ultimately asks viewers to reconsider how color is perceived. Who taught us to question colors that complement our skin? The suggestion that certain colors are more beautiful on white skin than on Black skin is rooted in bias, not truth. Yellow does not soften us, it reveals us.
