The second picture marked our last Father’s Day together. June 21, 2021. I left him that day stricken with a deep sadness, realizing that we had limited time left with him, although it was totally unknown at that time. Maybe it was the subtle deterioration of his appearance, or the self-disappointment and fear I felt within him, or maybe it was because I knew he was coming to the end of a life long battle which ultimately would not be won. I sobbed the whole way home.
While this photo holds a heavy sense of sorrow, it comes with countless other happy ones (like the first one) which I deeply cherish. He was a man who appeared strong, positive and composed for as long as he could. He concealed his pain and suffering in a desperate attempt to protect us…something he knew fathers are supposed to do. Despite the challenges he faced, I know he did his best, and today, and all my days, I choose to remember him and love him for exactly what he was—my dad.
