Last week, KEHPCA trained a pool of health care workers at Eka Hotel, Eldoret. The training that was organized by AMPATH’s multinational lung cancer control program (MLCCP) brought together varied cadres of health care professionals from different counties, and was officially closed by the programs’ Principal Investigator, Prof. Lameck Diero, who lauded the initiative.
KEHPCA applauds AMPATH’s MLCCP program for the bold step in training and appreciates the opportunity to improve quality palliative care provision and education.

Today, KEHPCA represented the hospices and palliative care fraternity in a public engagement forum at Semara Hotel, Machakos, contributing to the development of the Kenya Health Professionals Policy. The meeting was officially opened by Machakos County Commissioner Ms. Josephine Ouko and led by MoH officials under Dr. Musyoka (Director, Standards & Practice).
The policy aims to build a resilient and equitable health workforce to drive Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improved health outcomes. Key challenges highlighted included workforce shortages, inequitable distribution, skills mismatch, weak coordination, and health worker migration.
KEHPCA emphasized critical gaps in palliative care, noting the need for stronger integration into health workforce planning and training, inclusion within Primary Health Care and community systems (CHPs),improved equitable access, especially in underserved areas,
clear alignment with the National Palliative Care Policy (2021-2030)and better data and monitoring systems
We submitted a hard copy of our memorandum that recommended the explicit inclusion of palliative care in the policy to ensure holistic, person-centered care across the life course.
Together, we continue to advocate for a health system that improves the quality of life for all Kenyans.

Angelina Siparo, MA, EBS, Commissioner National Police Service Commission, delivered the keynote address that challenged prevailing perspectives and called for deliberate action.
Ms Siparo urged participants to rethink how they approach care, emphasizing continuous learning and intentional mentorship to strengthen future leadership.
Her message was anchored on three core pillars:
1. People- Communities, patients, caregivers, and health workers
2. Policy- Strong systems, research, and evidence to ensure that care is scalable and sustainable.
3. Programs- Adequate financing, taxation considerations on health products and technologies, and multisectoral collaboration to translate policy into action.
She concluded with a powerful reminder:
“Incurable does not mean unbearable.”
A call to collective responsibility—affirming that palliative care is not about giving up, but about showing up, together.

Dr. Timothy Olweny, Chair of the National Cancer Institute Kenya, shared a powerful reflection on his personal journey in palliative care and the urgent need for integration across hard-to-treat illnesses which can affect anyone, regardless of background or circumstance.
He underscored that meaningful change comes from being in positions of influence—because leadership is not given, it is taken.
With much still to be done, he called for innovation, scale-up, and expanded access to palliative care so that no one is left behind.
Dr. Olweny continues to champion palliative care integration at policy level.

Highlighting this conference is about MORE than just gathering.
It's a purposeful moment to:
🌟 Empower palliative care professionals to deliver the highest quality of care to those who need it most
🔍 Reflect on how far we've come in the palliative care journey — the wins, the lessons, and the lives touched
🛤️ Forge a way forward — charting a bold, compassionate path for the future of palliative care.
In a field where every interaction matters deeply, investing in the people who show up every single day for patients and families is not optional — it's everything.
