when i was a kid, i had a few nicknames.
one of them was a filipino word called “nana.”
in english, “nana” means pus, the white stuff
that comes out of a boil. they called me that
because of how much i always cried
i was picky about who held me. my mom still talks
about having to bring me everywhere, even to the
bathroom in the middle of the night
and my sister jokes that she still gets
ptsd every time she hears me cry
decades later, i’m still that kid
always careful with closeness
and the biggest crybaby
and last year finally made it clear why
i was selective long before i had words for it
funny how you grow up and realize
you’ve been the same person all along 🌀
