Even though Of Mice and Men didn’t have the happiest of endings, we still have some good news to share. Waverly, now known as Bernadette, will be staying in the Lyric Opera family! 🐕
Lyric Opera’s head scenic artist, Bethany Elliott, and her partner, Jordon Malone, who also works in the Kansas City theater scene, have adopted Bernadette, giving this adorable bundle of joy a FURever home. 💕
Thanks again to our partners at Wayside Waifs for entrusting us with Bernadette for the show, and congratulations to the new dog parents! ✨

What does opera feel like? 🤔
The unbridled JOY of a comedic chase. 🏃 The devastating ACHE of a final goodbye. 💔 The ELECTRICITY of a live performance. ⚡

After Candy (Wayne Tigges) makes the heartbreaking decision to put down the Old Dog (Charlee Blue), the Ballad Singer (@davidpelinotenor ) leads a mournful tune with the ranch hands to both reflect the somber atmosphere and to remind all of them that their lives are full of hardship, and like dust in the wind, they keep movin' on.

When @kcopera needed a dog to play a character in their new production of “Of Mice and Men," eight canines and their owners showed up to audition. The lucky dog made his big debut this weekend.
The opera is based on John Steinbeck's 1937 novella, "Of Mice and Men." It follows two migrant workers through California during the Great Depression.
Because the opera’s aesthetic draws from Dust Bowl-era photography, when Stage Director Kristine McIntyre was considering a dog for the production, she had a specific look in mind.
“We have to believe that it's a dog that could possibly have lived on a ranch in the mid 20th century,” McIntyre says. “So no doodles, no labradoodles, no fancy designer dogs.”
Two more chances to see Of Mice and Men this weekend! 🚨
Tickets are still available for performances tonight and tomorrow. This is one American classic you do not want to miss! ✨
