We are so honored that, all the way from Pennsylvania, fifth-grader Elliette Long made a diorama of our Community Bookshelf. 📚 Elliette, who’s never visited Kansas City, used her imagination and photos she found online to reimagine the design. ✨ Read more of her story at kclibrary.org/news #KCMO #KansasCity #KCLibrary

Kansas City used to look a whole lot different. Back in the 1850s, bluffs up to 120 feet tall hugged the Missouri River. These natural barriers made growth and business in Kansas City difficult. Then, an enterprising priest named Father Bernard Donnelly recruited hundreds of Irish immigrants to level the limestone and excavate our city. ⛏️☘️ Kansas City took decades to finish the grading process. Most of the work lasted until the 1880s, according to Pat O’Neill, a local history expert who wrote the book, “From the Bottom Up: The Story of the Irish in Kansas City.” Some accounts put the end date even later — at the turn of the century. 🪏 In the meantime, Kansas City was a certified muddy mess, knee deep at some points. 🎧 Hear the whole story of Kansas City’s battle with the bluffs in our episode “Carving Kansas City out from limestone”.
