Kay Brette joined me on Inlet Wire for a conversation about performance anxiety, stepping away from music, and finding her way back.
We also got into how working with @andyshick at Park Sound helped shape the songs, and the moment she realized something had changed when she was out there performing them live.
Full episode out now.

Kelsey Thompson - COMPOSER
Kelsey Thompson is a Vancouver-based composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. She studied Vocal Performance at MacEwan University in Edmonton, AB. before completing her Bachelor of Music Therapy in Vancouver, bringing both technical precision and emotional sensitivity to her compositional work.
She composed the original score for the web series REJECTION, crafting music tailored to the emotional rhythm of each scene, from intimate character moments to sharp comedic beats and heightened emotional turns. The pilot closes with her original song, “The Mess & The Martyr,” the title track from her upcoming 2026 EP, released under her solo artist project, KAY BRETTE.
Working from her Vancouver home studio, Kelsey oversees every stage of her production process, including instrumentation layering, vocal production, and arranging. She composes to the specific needs of each project, shaping sound to support narrative tone, pacing, and character development. The result is a stylistically diverse body of work spanning genres from folk and jazz to indie rock. Her rapidly growing collection of work includes screen composition, top-lining, collaborations with local and international artists, and her solo releases.
As recording artist KAY BRETTE, she surpassed 70,000 streams within the first six months of releasing music under the project and maintains an active presence in Vancouver’s live music community.

Hiiii! I’ve been kept indoors with the plague these last few days but my cat is keeping me in good company. Just letting you know that the title track from my upcoming EP “The Mess & The Martyr” is coming out this Friday the Thirteenth! A notorious day of luck and merriment ✨ this EP kind of tells a tale that began my journey of discovering and dismantling an unhealthy martyr-ism I found lived deep within me. The whole thing is a piece by piece story encompassing joy, anger, disappointment, and radical self love in all its unlikley sounding forms. So this is part 1! Eeeeeeeeeeee. If you’d like to presave you can find the link in my bio. Blessed days to ya.
smooches x 💕

KAY BRETTE is a Vancouver-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music is grounded in country-folk roots and shaped by indie rock sensibilities. With a 70s aesthetic flair, she draws musical influence from artists like Julia Jacklin and Angie McMahon, crafting songs that balance tenderness with edge and are carried by a soulful, striking voice. Acoustic textures sit alongside deeper-toned, modern electric guitars, creating a sound that feels nostalgic but never stuck too far in the past.
Her songwriting is emotionally honest and often laced with sass and depth. KAY is not afraid to say what she means, but she trusts metaphor to carry the weight of the story. There is a lived-in quality to her work that feels intimate and raw.
In 2025, KAY released her debut solo single “Coca Cola” followed by “Way She Goes” marking the beginning of her solo chapter. Several upcoming releases lead into her upcoming debut EP, “The Mess & The Martyr”, set for release in spring 2026, with the title track scheduled as the next single. Sass guaranteed.
Balancing relatable human tenderness with a quick witted edge, KAY BRETTE is quickly establishing herself as one of Vancouver’s most compelling emerging voices on the scene.
