Had an incredible two months @stove_works this summer. This event already happened but I love the poster so I’m posting to grid. A lot more people than I expected showed up and listened to me tell them what bird that is plus any interesting fact I could think of bc there weren’t that many birds. ❤️❤️❤️
Our next artist from our August studio visits at @stove_works is Richmond, VA-based artist Kayla Jones Pulido.
"I used my time at Stove Works exploring some of the backlog of found objects and sketches I had in my studio and preparing them for an exhibition in September. This included experimenting with a growing collection of bowling balls, one of which I cut in half and hollowed out until it was a shell capable of being manipulated almost past the point of recognition were it not for the fact that bowling balls have faces.
I also cast self-awareness onto Weedle, a creature invented in the Pokémon universe whose personhood as a series of spheres is held together through animation physics and willful suspension of disbelief.
I often use sculpture and drawing to slow down or interrogate quick symbols from pop culture and my childhood, and study what idiomatic myths and biases have been encoded into my understanding of the world."
Kayla Jones Pulido lives in Richmond, VA. She received her BFA in Studio Art and BA in English from the University of Texas at Austin in 2016 and her MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2023. She has presented work in Virginia, Texas, New York, Rhode Island, and the UK.

Bit overdue… some images from my thesis show “One millionth” at The Anderson Gallery in April.
Got a lot of feedback about how quiet the room felt. Relief alongside immense, immanent pressure. Rendered in snowman Daniel Radcliffe and carbon
