Thinking about Grandma Linda a lot on this full moon.
We lost Grandma Linda last month and celebrated her life two weekends ago in NJ. I feel so grateful that family and friends were able to gather from near and far for her send off. It would have made her SO happy to have so many of her people in one room.
As someone put it at her Celebration of Life (maybe in Dave’s poem?!), even though our family is somewhat piecemeal and complicated, “step,” “half,” and “in-law” weren’t in Grandma Linda’s vocabulary. She brought everyone into the fold and made everyone feel special no matter the relation.
Nicknames were one of her tools for making each one of us feel special. She called me “Luna” not because I reminded her of the moon or in reference to some special celestial moment, but to be contrary and poke fun at the fact that my other grandmother called me “Sunshine.” I loved her slightly mischievous sense of humor.
My tag as Luna inspired an ongoing exchange of all things lunar. We sent pictures, articles, and instagram posts of all the lunar phenomenas. Super Blood Moon! A Flower Moon! We rarely missed a month. She would have gotten a kick out of tonight’s Full Beaver Moon, and I imagine her text would have read something like “DAM! have you seen the moon? The Beaver Moon is shining bright tonight!❣️🐘”
What a gift to forever be reminded of you by something as beautiful as the moon. I think of you every time I look up and see her, especially on the full ones like tonight.
