I was vulnerable, and I took no shit.
I did a thing yesterday. When I agreed to do a @telltalepresents show, I didn't realize the path I would take to prepare. I've told the story on stage for comedy probably close to 100 times by now. Last night was the only time I've ever fully told the story. I've joked about what I said, but I never admitted out loud why.
Because I wanted to be loved.
Maybe it's because of so many hours of therapy and self-work. Maybe it was, at 40, finally starting to understand what love actually means. I was finally ready to be more open and raw with an audience than I ever had before. Turns out, I'm still kinda funny when I do.
I'm not sure I really communicated the lessons, but the process of preparing that story helped me really learn them. Even almost 30 years later.
Being performative, even if you think you are doing it to "be good," doesn't actually do any good. Being performative so people think you're cool and "bad" doesn't do any good either.
The people who don't love you will never love you, no matter how you try to "buy" their love. The best thing you can really do is love yourself, as you are.
I wish I could have loved 14-year-old me better. But I can love myself now, and that's what matters.
