Last September, I drove 2000km to find inspiration and the perfect setting for North Country, exploring areas Iāve never visited before (hey, Tobermory! Hey, Manitoulin Island!) and others Iāve only passed through. I sailed on a ferry I didnāt know existed across Georgian Bay, hiked to the Cup and Saucer Lookout, sipped a pint overlooking Gore Bay, spotted a giant flock of Blue Heron (hundreds!), crossed the historic Little Current swing bridge, posed with the Big Nickel (itās really big), devoured fudge at the French River Trading Post, stumbled upon a where-are-we rural farm store (great chicken pot pies!), filled up at a gas station/LCBO/Canada Post/bus station/bait shop, and lunched overlooking the picturesque Lake Timiskaming. In all of this, I was on the hunt for one particular bison ranch (which I never found) and ended up at another, which turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.

Cold River is a fictional small town in northern Ontario, situated on Hwy 11, otherwise known as the Trans-Canada Highway (a system of routes that will take you across the entire country. In Ontario, it is the northernmost highway.) I drew inspiration from a collection of towns ā Temiskaming Shores, Earlton, Englehart, and Cobalt ā to create the setting for this story, and while Cold River may not exist in real life, by the time youāve finished North Country, I hope it exists in your imagination.
