默墨Silent Ink 🎶 In August 2024, the Taliban introduced new “vice and virtue” laws silencing women in public and private spaces. These laws require women to fully veil their bodies and faces in public and prohibit them from speaking, singing, or reading aloud, even within their own homes. This reality feels unbearable to me. My art was born from sorrow, a place where I found refuge in expression. To study, to travel, to speak—these freedoms have been the threads of my healing, stitching together wounds that seemed unfixable. I cannot imagine a world where the right to voice pain, joy, or even existence itself is stolen. When I shared my vision for Silent Ink with Beibei and Dr. ChengYu, they immediately embraced it. Together, we envisioned a performance that would carry a message of solidarity for Afghan women who remain invisible yet unbroken. This is not an act of rebellion but of witness, a way of saying: We hear you, even if they will not let you speak. The performance unfolds before Jizi’s panoramic 40-meter cosmic ink painting, a work steeped in Taoist philosophy and the energy of the universe. Though the ink is silent, it pulses with centuries of untold stories, grief, and resilience. We are not warriors. We know our actions alone cannot dismantle oppression. But we hope to remind the women silenced by this cruelty that they are not alone, that their existence echoes far beyond the walls that seek to contain them. Renowned musicians Wang Beibei and Cheng Yu will perform live with Xie Rong, standing in solidarity with Afghan women’s unimaginable realities, embodying the call from within the burka. Fragmented sounds from the Silk Road, contributed by Uyghur musician @shohretttt Turkish double-neck baglama player @ozan_baysal , Afghan drumming recorded by @seedsofsounduk , and Kazakh kui by @dombra_dizzyac , weave into a powerful soundscape composed by Wang Beibei, echoing Rong’s own childhood struggles and amplifying the silenced voices and songs of freedom. This performance reimagines ink as a vessel for the female voice, exploring the search for refuge in cosmic energies and the healing found through shared, broken silences.
