When I first taught my viral Lana Del Rey course at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute (all praise to Jason King), I knew that I wanted to write a book about Lana and her impact on music and culture in general. At first, I was so wrapped up in this idea of how she handled “sadness” that I almost forgot how we repress sadness and how she releases it. I tethered the idea to my own grief (“Look I’m sad!”) and that was a good reason to put the idea down for a second. Then, in what has been my most challenging year yet (with one last hurdle to overcome back to normalcy), I understood how expression and repression can do both do harm and good. We end up with Autoimmune Disorders (🙋🏻‍♀️) due to covering up emotions and just trying to exist in a panic-inducing anxiety. But really, this is just my reason for approaching this book differently than I might have even four months ago. This book is a multi-faceted examination of Lana’s impact, Fourth Wave Feminism, and the multiple meanings of being a Sad Girl. Thank you to @bloomsburypublishing and Michael Tan for seeing the vision, @bobsinthecity for making it happen, and especially God for bringing me back into my purpose. Mommy, another one is coming! This book is years in the making. Coming October 14th, Episodes by Gucci Mane with yours truly. I’m in awe of how raw and honest this book is, as Gucci details his journey through mental health.
