One of the things I find most interesting and fun about being married to someone from a different country is finding out about and sharing history and traditions from each other’s countries 😄 I think it also makes you look at your own traditions in a different way; i.e things you usually take for granted because it’s always been like that, but interesting for people who have never seen it before. Today I was able to introduce Elvis to one of our more eccentric customs - Morris Dancing - and thought I would share it here too 😁
This tradition happens across many different regions in the U.K. and the dances were and are usually performed to welcome in Spring or for May Day, as well as at other points throughout the year. Each region has its own unique songs and dances. We were lucky because Abingdon (the town I grew up in) has a very famous and historic troop of Morris Men, with it being a (documented) tradition in the town since the 1500s. The horns of the Ox are a distinguishing factor here because - from the Abingdon Morris Men website - “In 1700, the story goes that there was an ox roast on the Bury (Market Place) and a dispute occurred between the men from Ock Street and those from the Vineyard at the other end of town as to who should have the horns of the beast. A fight between the two factions took place and eventually the Ock Street men managed to take the horns past the Cock and Tree pub in Ock Street, and claim them for themselves. These horns are still in the possession of the present morris dance team, and since that date the people of Ock Street have the right to elect their own mock mayor. This story, including the date, is first reported in an 1825 newspaper.
So the same dances, happening in the same place, literal centuries later. Pretty damn cool and hope it continues for a few more centuries🤘🏻

Happy Pokémon Day and 30th release Anniversary to the best there ever was 😄 30 years of obsession and joy, from travelling across the land finding and trading cards, to journeying through Johto, Kanto and beyond on the Gameboy, to running through Hyde Park on PokemonGo release week with about 100 other people trying to find a Snorlax 😅, to being able to show our old cards to the next generation of trainers, to the community, to nostalgia and childhood magic.
