Shortwave Collective workshop at ESS with the brilliant @soundarthannah šŸ¦ We had such fun playing in the yard with our handmade receivers. Between our experiments over the past couple of days, we heard baseball, talk radio, faint music, some Russian, and a good amount of noise. Collective tuning was a joy :)

Tuesday, November 11, I’m giving a talk and doing a demo on the 16.1 CLEAT speaker system at @elasticarts as part of the ā€œMaking Multichannel Musicā€ series. I’ll share some of the routing behind ā€œDrop Lift & Fly,ā€ a piece I composed for a 7-voice choir and the CLEAT system that was performed earlier this year. And then I’ll discuss some more recent multichannel projects and experiments, including a performance piece with roving speakers on a labyrinth and the spiralized voices pictured/heard in this max patch. This is a free event and there will be an opportunity to try out the system at the end of the workshop.

š˜Šš˜Ŗš˜µš˜ŗ š˜Ŗš˜Æ š˜š˜¦š˜¢š˜µ 2 one-night performance! Friday, August 22 at 8 PM 1224 W Loyola Ave, Chicago IL A hot summer evening inside of a parked car. Unfolding in real time through the lens of a dashboard cam, encounters in a car outside of Roman Susan accumulate and combust out of the camera’s view onto the street. Part drive-in movie, part surveillance voyeurism, part abstracted domestic drama, Carlos Ferguson, Kate In, and Johanna Kasimow work together to create multimedia performances that contend with the sensation of ecological crises. The work examines the interior drama captured through the lens of a dashboard camera paired with the unpredictable rhythms outside the camera's frame. @katesin___ #CarlosFerguson @johannakasimow @gerrithatcher @tiny_tiny_circus #DevisedPerformance #FreeChicago #RogersPark #AlleyDrama #CarPlay #CityInHeat #ContemporaryArt #ExpandedCinema

Doing another round of the City in Heat performance cycle at Roman Susan this Friday, August 22 at 8 PM. Johanna Kasimow, Carlos Ferguson, and I first developed and performed City in Heat 1 in 2023 at Open Air Media Festival in Iowa City. This new work picks up where the characters left off, this time in Chicago and with an expanded cast and crew. Join us outside Roman Susan on Friday for something like live theater plus expanded cinema about being people in the city in the heat. Look for the orange car.

I’m happy to announce that I recently received an Individual Artists Program grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events for The Almanac of Questions, an audio series I’m developing with my dear friend and collaborator Sally Beauvais! Thanks so much to DCASE and the City of Chicago for supporting artists. #DCASEgrants

Love to the choir for Drop Lift & Fly, a piece I wrote for this vocal ensemble and the CLEAT system at Elastic Arts. The piece includes a combination of live choir, interactive sampling, and fixed media playback. The choir took all these roles in stride and became a versatile entity that could experiment and collaborate with the speakers during the performance. Working on the piece and singing together was a special experience and I’m very grateful to these friends for their spirit and labor with the piece. Special thanks to Tom Dixon, Troy Cruz, Dom Bonelli, and especially Adam Vida, who played percussion in the playback. Thanks to Stephan Moore, Matt Test, Sam Clapp, and Ben Billington for making CLEAT available for these experiments. Last of all, some peonies for the almanac: It’s a dream and a luxury to sing together during peony season just some days after the strawberry moon.

Sharing some moments from a recent trip to Colombia for the Media Art History International Conference x Festival de la Imagen. I spent time in BogotĆ  and Manizales and attended talks and performances around the theme of the Regenerative, with threads on collective design, contemporary activations of ancestral memory/archives, and ecological balance— all of which are sincerely exciting topics to me. I’m returning with expanded thoughts on these ideas and new energy to put toward the experimental media and technology work that I get to do as an artist and in collaboration with others. Some favorites— Gabriela Aceves discussing the work and archive of Pola Weiss (first slide) Kindred sweet venue and community at Matik Matik in BogotĆ  (sixth slide) Mountains (ever present) Thank you to the Driehaus Foundation for the professional development grant support.
