‘Pliable Planes: Expanded Textiles & Fibre Practices opens @unswgalleries today. The project takes its title from a 1957 essay by Anni Albers that interprets textiles as fundamentally structural and endlessly mutable. I’m so thrilled to have developed new work for this exhibition. You Don’t Need Me To Tell You (2022) is a dual channel video, a call and response between two textile wind instruments that operate as transmission markers in the landscape. Shot on Wodi Wodi land on the south coast of NSW with cinematography by @joshraymond and the most beautiful sound composed by @laurenzpike The exhibition continues until 17 July before touring nationally. It includes beautiful works by Akira Akira, Sarah Contos, Lucia Dohrmann, Mikala Dwyer, Janet Fieldhouse, Teelah George, Paul Knight, Anne-Marie May, John Nixon, Jacqueline Stojanović and Katie West. Congratulations and thank you to curators @kph_september and @cat_woollley for this exquisite exhibition 💛💫 Photos: @robinhearfield You Don’t Need Me To Tell You, 2022. Production stills. Urgent is the Rhythm is part of the 2022 Adelaide Biennial @agsa.adelaide . It aims to bring art, climate and materials science together by charting the shifting material states of sailcloth and seaweed. The work imagines the art gallery as a metabolising body which enables these synthetic and organic entanglements to occur, and as a contested site where the politics of conservation and collection are teased out, speculating on the museum as a collector of carbon, and as a future site for carbon storage. Urgent is the Rhythm materialises C02 by giving it a physical presence as heavy, weighted blocks of carbon. 6 pleated blocks make a ring, and 13 rings make a column nearly 3 metres tall. It transforms over a tonne of algae biomass and oyster shell waste from aquaculture industries into a biomaterial with potential for architectural application and for possible use in building and construction. The project has been supported by the Climate Change Cluster (C3), Faculty of Science, UTS, State Herbarium of South Australia, Appellation Oysters, Pacific Bio Australia, and Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. It has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. #adelaidebiennial #themetabolicmuseum Photo: @robinhearfield
