ā€˜Kate Mitchell: In the Eye of the Giant’ unfolds as a slow, ascending digital scroll, transforming the Naala Badu atrium into a space for contemplation. Over 28 days, Mitchell undertook an ā€˜emotional devotional,’ inviting emotions that shape art-making to commune with her. What emerged are hundreds of intricate ink drawings, messages transcribed rather than emotions depicted, woven into a 20-metre moving manuscript. Echoing the legacy of medieval makers like Hildegard of Bingen and Guda, the work extends a lineage of inscribing embodied experience into image and text. Here, emotions are encountered as active forces, guiding, directing and forming the work itself. šŸ“ Art Gallery of New South Wales, Naala Badu (Lower level 1) šŸ—“ļø Until June 2026 šŸŽŸļø Free šŸ’™ @kate____mitchell - Installation view of Kate Mitchell's In the Eye of the Giant 2025 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales Ā© Kate Mitchell

Kate Mitchell’s major video work ā€˜In the Eye of the Giant’, commissioned by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, is currently on show in the Naala Badu atrium. ā€˜In the Eye of the Giant’ by Kate Mitchell takes the form of a slowly ascending digital scroll. The moving-image work, commissioned for the 20-metre large screen of the Naala Badu atrium, visualises seven emotional states that shape the artist’s practice. Running on a continuous loop, it acknowledges the transience of feeling and invites visitors to tune into the quiet intelligence of their own emotions. ā€˜In the Eye of the Giant’ is on show at the Art Gallery of New South Wales until June 2026. Well this was a fun task: sifting through the Art Gallery of New South Wales collection to select artworks that have informed my practice. I chose Bernd and Hilla Becher’s Framework Houses (1959–71), which instantly took me back to sitting on the floor in the Photo Media department during the always brilliant slideshow lectures of Maureen Burns, with the darkroom chemicals wafting in the air. Then there’s John Baldessari’s Six Colourful Inside Jobs (1977), (I love a good title), there’s also Susan Hiller’s Die Gedanken Sind Frei (Thoughts Are Free) (2012) (just brilliant), and Agatha Gothe-Snape’s Between You and Me (2011), which takes me right back to a very specific moment in the Sydney art world and in my life. Currently in @artgalleryofnsw Look magazine šŸ’™

So lovely to see Beyond Setting Suns again šŸŒ… Currently showing at @wollongongartgallery as part of Set Sets, an exhibition looking back at the first decade of my video practice, in conversation with works from the gallery’s collection. It’s a nice way to see how artists explore the same themes across time and space. Beyond Setting Suns, 2016 40 second loop @chalkhorsegallery

The bubble mixture in Many Bubbles Blessing has lucky four-leaf clover water mixed through it to add a little extra luck to start the year šŸ€ I can’t help myself when I walk past a patch of clover, always stopping for a sticky beak to see if I can find one. So far I’ve been pretty lucky. I keep every four-leaf I find tucked in my diary. Get blessed by a bubble today on the forecourt of the Naala Badu building @artgalleryofnsw for Hive children’s festival šŸ’šāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØāœØšŸ€
