It was a genuine honour to serve on the Winter Stations jury this year! ❄️❄️❄️ Winter Stations has become a signature Toronto tradition that I mark on my calendar year after year. It happens outside the downtown core and outside the typical “festival season.” At a time when public space can feel less accessible, Winter Stations brings people out, sparks conversation, and turns a cold beach into a joyful gathering place. ❄️❄️❄️ @winter.stations 📸 Photos by @joelgale.imaging

Freshly home from my exploratory research residency out on Hornby Island in BC, home to the Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park. There, I spent time writing, wandering, sketching, photographing, and reading while lying in the grass. Sometimes, I would just sit in the shade of a sculpture and stare at the mountains for an undetermined amount of time. I refrained from using the internet as much as humanly possible. The weather was gorgeous and I didn’t spend too much time indoors. I spent time thinking about how installations can truly respond to its site, and how sculpture can require embodied movement to view the art as several unique compositions. I also reflected on art viewing experiences; coming from a busy urban arts community to enjoying 200 acres of sculpture space SOLO really made me consider how drastically experiencing art changes through setting and atmosphere. Feeling inspired, restored, and reinvigorated!

We’ve been sitting on this secret for YEARS now. It’s exciting (and a relief) that we can finally tell people that @jordansook has designed the coolest centre piece for the forthcoming Etobicoke Civic Centre. This 4,000 lb sculpture is reminiscent of “spaghetti junction,” the previous nickname for the Six Points interchange that used to be near this site. Shout out to @publicartlady for going on this commissioning journey with me.

Curating the entrance installation for @artistprojectto was a privilege, and seeing the response to @kellenhatanaka ’s “Everything Gon’ Be Alright This Morning” has been so wonderful! Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts, sent messages, or paused to sit with the work - and to CBC Arts for shining a light on the work in their newsletter!

⚾️ The Art of the Game ⚾️ This year, @artistprojectto invites you to explore a unique spotlight on the dynamic relationship between sports and art. From resilience and rivalry to creativity and competition, this special feature highlights how the world of sports inspires bold artistic expression. Entrance Installation Curator Katriina Campitelli shares: “When I was invited to curate the entrance installation for Artist Project, guided by this year’s theme The Art of the Game, my mind immediately went to Kellen Hatanaka’s series Everything Gon’ Be Alright This Morning. His tribute to the Vancouver Asahi reveals how sport can carry stories of community and resilience. Kellen’s subjects embody the weight of history and cultural memory, reminding us that sport is not just a competition, but a mirror for current events and global affairs. Standing at eight-feet-tall, these heroic figures greet visitors at the threshold, inviting us to consider how play can hold both struggle and joy simultaneously.” @kellenhatanaka See you there 👋
