Thank you to curator Dr Loucia Manopoulou, Director of Newlands House Gallery, and Kas Williams for co-creating a tremendous menu and table setting for the Old Dining Room at West Dean as part of the first ROSA Botanical Art Fair. A swerve away from my usual colour pop with this one and such a limited colour palette has been a dive into the unknown. The black background made the transparencies and colour work in totally different ways so there have been many re-makes but I’m really happy with how it’s turned out. I love the drama and I’ve fallen for its dark lushness. Gothic Bloom was a no-brainer for a title. So…. I’m waiting for paint to dry and I get distracted by this small pink box case I’ve found and it’s taken me down a retro rabbit hole to party and festival days when it was usually full of things that lit up, sparkled and changed light. Batteries have gone on most of them but amazingly a few still work so these beautiful images have come from playing around with lighting painted acetates inside the box ! Very seductive stuff. At a bit of a loose end waiting for some photography on a new piece and I found lots of fluroescent and clear acetate cut-offs lying around in my studio so I started painting them with gesso et voilà ….. blooming scraps ! Tools of the Trade. Sunday studio and I thought I’d share some of the elements that I use in the making. This piece, Dark Bloom, is so nearly finished. Just a bit more painting, printing, cutting and pinning and making a mess because sometimes its the random falling together of things that makes interesting discoveries. I need a walk and cherry blossom is bursting out all over the city so thats all percolating into the mix too. I’m dialling down the colour for once with a journey to the dark side. Early days of experimenting with mixes of painting, photography and drawing in a new piece called Dark Bloom - or at least I think thats what I’ll call it. It’s never easy to take shots of shiny things so this one’s a bit scrappy but it has a sense of dark drama that I’m liking very much !
