Today would have been my grandma Dorothy’s 100th birthday 🎂 We were supposed to have cheesecake.
I was going through old photos and a few things became abundantly clear.
1) Dorothy was a wonderful caretaker by nature. She raised children, grandchildren and took care of her husband through poor health for many years. She raised me like a mother.
2) Miss Dorothy was a fashionista and unknowing pioneer of feminist fashion. After 1950 you couldn’t catch her in dresses or skirts. She wore pants and silk tops with bright patterns, scarves and custom glasses. She was a hard working farm girl in her youth and that never really left her.
3) She was just a nice person. She really cared about everyone and making sure people were ok. She sacrificed a lot in life to make sure her family was safe and happy, and NEVER complained.
4)It’s hard to distill a wonderful 100 year-old life down to a few words and photos.
5) We are really going to miss her💔💜
My Grandma Dorothy was just shy of her 100th birthday when she died. Lived almost 100 years and no one ever had anything but a kind word to say about her. By every measure, she was truly kind and everybody loved always her, especially our dog Tanooki.
In the 1930s, Dorothy grew up on her parents Minnesota dairy farm, raising and milking cows. She would often sneak away to go read books in the barn by candle light.
She was a veracious reader, she loved Stephen King books and movies, The Shining was her favorite. When I was 10 she gave me a copy of Carrie to read after she redacted the nasty bits(most of the book) with a sharpie.
She was a Milkmaid, a Factory Worker, a Gardener, a Mother and great Friend. She taught me how to bake and that cooking can relieve stress. She trusted me to help her around the house and help build her garden.
Eric & I lived alone with Dorothy for almost 7 years, through COVID-19. In 2021 Dorthy broke her hip after a night fall and Tanooki barked us awake and he saved her then.
During the pandemic lockdown we made great exotic meals, watched many movies and had great conversations about genology and family history. Last year, at age 99 we even took Dorothy to the movie theater to see Sinners & Longlegs. We really wanted her to have a great end of life journey.
Eric and I are beyond grateful to her family Lee & Donna & Kay for all the help over the years.
She truly lived a great life and she didn’t want to stop moving and being independent until the very end. Now, to distill her 100 year life down to a few words and pictures doesn’t do her justice. Dorothy was a very special person and I was blessed to have known her.
No words can ever express how much this woman helped and cared for us over our lifetimes. I’m just glad we were able to do the same for her at the end.
Originally I was trying to get a cease and desist from Hidden Valley but now I just want them to run me some money honestly
