KARLINA MEŽECKA Displayed alongside Raudive’s notebook, Karlīna Mežecka’s work continues her investigation into the tensions between ceramics and blown glass, developed during her studies at the Royal College of Art. By combining the density of clay with the translucency of glass, she produces fluid, bodily forms that hover between the organic and the alien. These ambiguous shapes suggest fragments of flesh or internal matter without resolving into recognizable anatomy, remaining suspended in a transitional state between material presence and estrangement. This oscillation is embedded in the work’s material logic, where opacity, viscosity, and surface operate as carriers of meaning. Mežecka’s practice resonates with the interpretive instability of Konstantin Raudive’s recordings, which blur distinctions between signal and projection, human and other. Here, matter itself becomes a medium of translation, suggesting that what appears foreign may lie just beyond the limits of perception. Karlīna Mežecka (b. 1995) is Latvian artist currently living and working in London, United Kingdom. — Pictured: Karlīna Mežecka Untitled

I was able to spend the last two months in residency in New York. My heart is full and I have a lot of thank-yous that need to be said to everyone that made this trip amazing and truly unforgettable. First of all to @kim_cac and Vija Celmiņš for the opportunity to spend two months as a resident at @iscp_nyc To @aparraru and the MIT glass department for the best glass blowing experience ever - what a privilege and joy it was to work with you and learn how to push forward what can be done to combine ceramics and glass 💜 to @jurgis.ruza and the Boston crew for taking me under your wing in the city To the incredible group of artists & staff at ISCP - an immeasurable inspiration to meet and work alongside everyone. And all the wonderful souls that I met and saw in the two months that flew by too fast. I ❤️ NY, I’ll see y’all again soon. xx

As part of the Kim? Residency Award 2024, Latvian artist Karlīna Mežecka (@karlinasm ) is in residence at the @iscp_nyc , developing new works that extend her ongoing investigation into ceramics and glass. Mežecka collaborated with materials scientists at MIT in Boston, experimenting with advanced glass techniques in the university’s glassblowing studio. She is the sixth Latvian artist to join ISCP through the Kim?–ISCP partnership.

Turning to the poetics of regional space and the emotional experience within it, I reflect on categories of fragility. The images of the space “move in both directions: they are in us as much as we are in them”, wrote Gaston Bachelard. Leaning on this notion, the exhibition Archive of Fragility encompasses interior space and the individual’s inner world as well as external space and outward bodily experience, becoming a tool for the analysis of human soul.
