I’m giving up nature photography to exclusively shoot studio portraits. JK (April Fool’s)! In all seriousness, I love to be constantly learning, and this year I had two (non-professional) goals for my photography: 1) to take a lot more photos with me in them and 2) to get really really really comfortable with flash photography. This chapter of motherhood has made it challenging to get out for golden hour shoots or spend a whole day in the field, so growing my indoor “studio” skills is a great way to adapt to shooting new subjects (or familiar subjects in a new way) and also super fun! @aubreywestlund ’s @stockphotobesties group also recently hosted a call with @kelseykurtisphoto to talk about self portraits, and they inspired me to put in some practice today. Let me know if you want to see the photos!

Happy Spring, Y'all! Today my favorite season officially begins. There is still no sign of any of these beautiful blooms (except for one tiny purple crocus peeking out of my lawn) but they will be here before we know it. I can't wait! #springflowers #springblooms #signsofspring

Not sure there is much that is more American than immigrating for a better life and the right to protest. If you live in the USA, don't you dare look away as innocent people are murdered in the streets by the hands of our federal government for doing exactly these things. Our country was founded on the very basis of freedom from tyrannical governments. Yet here we are. Years ago during the Obama administration I traveled to Washington DC to protest the Keystone XL tar sands project. That feels like a lifetime ago. The only protest photos I have are from that one very peaceful demonstration in which no one was hurt and no lives were sacrificed. There are MANY people documenting what is happening in Minneapolis and around the country. Watch the videos, use some critical thinking skills, and don't give once ounce of credibility to the lies we are being fed about what is really happening on the streets of America. This bird is our national bird. It's supposed to represent all that is good in America. So, do like the eagle and OPEN YOUR EYES. SPEAK UP. DEMAND CHANGE. Contact your senators and representatives. Shift your spending money away from businesses that profit from and benefit ICE. Those actions may feel small, but they are doable, and collectively, if enough of us do them, they have the power to make a difference. If you do nothing, you stand for nothing.

This is the only ice I ever want to encounter. I unfortunately have not been off the internet, and am more in touch with reality than the administration of our federal government. My heart aches. It feels like every week there is another absolute atrocity, whether against women or the environment or humanity itself. How am I supposed to raise a child in this world? How am I supposed to feel ALL of this and not grow tired or numb? I don’t want to be one of those people who is so at a loss of what to do that I do nothing, but what do I do? Ice is for pretty pictures. For skating, climbing, fishing, and hockey. Not murder.

The design world is up in arms about #clouddancer being the #pantone #coloroftheyear and I'm just like... oh I have art for that. Swans on a frozen lake in a snowstorm (horizontal edition). In the full res images you can see thousands of tiny snowflakes dancing through the air.

The final image in my 2026 calendar is one I captured not far from home, of Otter Brook framed by golden trees and fallen autumn leaves. I feel like fall is one of the hardest seasons (for me) to shoot. The boldest colors are fleeting and traditionally I have always been very busy during September/October because for many years I worked the education and recreation fields, and this time of year is when so many work related events would ramp up. Fortunately, over the years I've managed to capture the beauty of the northeast's changing seasons, so while I'm rarely coming away with dozens of spectacular images every season, year after year the one or two beauties I get have started to add up. I have reached day 12 of 12 of sharing the images I selected for my 2026 calendar. While I'm glad I stuck it out, this experiment of posting every day for two weeks has proven to me I really have no clue with how to engage Instagram's algorithm, and it's so disappointing to me that social media has evolved in a way that is more about marketing schemes than actual connection. I plan to take a social media sabbatical soon so this may be my last post for a while (or I may hold off until the new year). Thank you to all those who have followed along on this journey. If you'd like a 2026 calendar, follow the link in my bio to purchase directly from my publisher's site, and then use Honey or another browser app to snag the best discount code. Currently, items are 30% off. Purchasing one calendar is infinitely more helpful than you liking all of my calendar posts, and they make great gifts for anyone who loves nature, beautiful photography, or just having a physical calendar to look at. You can also share my calendar posts/links among friends or on your social media pages. I do have some exciting news that I will be able to announce sometime in 2026, so I will be back. Thanks for all your support and have a happy holiday season and new year!

Day 11 of 12 days of calendar photos. This photo was taken my first year living in New Hampshire, on a late September trip up to the Whites with @jimsalgephoto who does fall foliage predictions for Yankee Magazine each year. Jim and I are both NJ-NH transplants, and I feel so fortunate to have been able to connect with him when I moved up here, and have an expert show me around the Whites for my first overnight adventure in the mountains. #whitemountainsnh #visitnh #yankeemagazine #ilovenh

Day 10 of 12 days of sharing the photos featured in my 2026 calendar. This photograph was taken an a captive raptor workshop I assisted with as part of @floridasbirdingandphotofest many years ago. The workshop was in a parking lot immediately off the beach, and once everything was set up I snuck down to the water for a few quick sunrise shots before heading back to help participants. One of the perks of being a workshop "helper" and not a workshop "leader" is having a bit more flexibility to do your own photography. When I'm teaching photography I'm often so invested in what my students are doing that I take very few photos myself, even if that means missing some incredible opportunities. I'm grateful for a lot of things today, one of which is all the amazing opportunities I have had in my lifetime to travel, do, and see some really cool things. If not for Greg Downing and NatureScapes.Net taking a chance on me many years ago, this shot and many others would have never happened. Thank you @gregdowningphoto for sponsoring many wonderful adventures, letting me learn so much from you, and believing in me when I was still just a green young nature photographer with big dreams. #thanksgiving #thankful #floridabeach

Day 9 of 12 days of sharing photos from my 2026 calendar (now 30% off with the code 2025VIP30, link in bio). Getting to St Marys Falls was a doozy. It was 2007, so we were following a guide book and it directed us along a path that *surprise surprise* had been completed destroyed by a hurricane. I'm talking washouts where the trail would vertically drop off 10 feet into a river. Fortunately water levels were modest, I was traveling with someone (doing sketchy things solo is infinitely more sketchy than when you have a someone who can go for help in an emergency), and I was younger and perhaps a bit less risk averse, so with some careful navigating we managed to cross the river (several times) and make it to this beautiful waterfall. These days you can get super up-to-date trail information online and via apps, but back then, I still relied heavily on outdated maps and guidebooks with questionable difficulty ratings. But it was all fun, and makes for a good story.
