Big day for me - I don’t write about fashion often, but my relationship to it goes back as far as I can remember. All my life, it’s been my favorite form of escapism, rebellion, fantasy, self-construction; the one thing I love without any anxiety and engage with out of pure joy. But enough about me! For The New Yorker, I profiled Raul Lopez, a visionary designer whose work fascinated me years ago, when I first came across it, and still does. Attempting to capture in words the strange beauty of his design language has been one of the most enjoyable challenges of my career, y menos mal porque pasé dos años escribiendo esto. Thank you to the 62 (!) people I interviewed for this (I wish I could have used every anecdote and quote), to the team at @luar for opening their doors and books and archives to me, to the team at The New Yorker for their always impeccable work, to my editors, Daniel Gross and David Haglund, who followed me down every rabbit hole, to Anna Wintour, who responds to emails within an hour, to Raul, to clothes, to New York City, and to the phrase “bitch, step your pussy up,” which really did motivate me as I wrote this—my first profile for my favorite magazine. The link is in my bio 💌 Gracias por leer.

Susan Sontag once described the United States as "the quintessential Surrealist country." She went on: "It is obviously too easy to say that America is just a freak show, a wasteland — the cut-rate pessimism typical of the reduction of the real to the surreal. But the American partiality to myths of redemption and damnation remains one of the most energizing, most seductive aspects of our national culture." When their publicist sent me Elliot and Erick Jiménez's latest series, El Monte, the odd photographs struck me as uniquely American. I love them. You can read what I wrote at the link in my bio! 🌹 Gracias @elliotanderick por la conversación<3

Carlo Scarpa spent a decade designing this cemetery for the Brion family and I spent a decade + a half dreaming of visiting it 🤍
