I had two books out this year! Don’t worry, this is not an aspirational end-of-the-year post.
It’s tough to remember that Instagram is a year-round highlights reel. When you are in the business of selling something you’ve created, it always feels like you’re not doing enough, or at least not as much as the person who is posting every day and cranking out a book a year and going on a 14-city tour.
What these pictures don’t show is that writing (and publishing) both of these books took so much out of me that for most of this year I wasn’t sure I would ever want to write again. I’m very proud of The Champions and LTDR, but after twelve years and ten books, something broke inside me this time.
Very slowly, I’ve been making my way back to why I began doing this in this first place. I’m working on something I’m excited about, but I have no idea when it will be published, or if it ever will be at all! So I won’t have a book out in 2025, or maybe even in 2026 either.
This time of year is tough even without the funhouse mirror of social media distorting the idea of what a great year entails— if your greatest accomplishment of 2024 was surviving it, I see you 🫡
Thank you @bncliftoncommons and @jessicagoodman for a wonderful launch event! I left behind lots of signed copies of the @barnesandnoble exclusive edition (and almost walked off with that awesome sign).
If you couldn’t make tonight’s event, I’ll be chatting with @jordynhtaylor at @bncarleplace this Thursday at 6 pm!!
The Champions is out today! I hope you enjoy returning to Sunnybrook as much as I did and if you’re in the area, you can come see @jessicagoodman and me tonight at @bncliftoncommons !
Thank you @kbmarino@_lydiagregovic_ and Agent Sarah for your endless patience and help getting this book to readers!
And thank you @yawritersara for the absolutely amazing themed cookies 🥹🥹

2016 vs. 2026…first slide: ALA Midwinter, exactly 10 years ago. The Darkest Corners was my first book published under my real name and the first time a publisher had sent me anywhere. I’d been writing full time for 5 years and not really having the best time. The librarians at ALA seemed like they were having a good time so I went home and applied to get a Master’s degree in library science.
Last slide: 2026…working full time in a library. Having a good time✌️
Got a new girl! (And bangs)
Chicken Francese AKA Franny has been here less than 24 hours and is already tearing the coop up with massive orange cat energy. (No comments about how I need to join Silkies Anonymous, I ALREADY KNOW!!)
The Champions has been out for a year! Feels weird not having anything new coming out, but I’m still writing, just very slowly and on my own terms. If you’re here for books, thanks for sticking around for chickens and other weird content 🥰
