Peace peace it’s time to finish this final reflection in this visual series for my song “Why.” I hope you all have had time to experience it on @youtube hit the link in my bio for more.
What started as a letter to America turned into a mirror and a moment of remembering that I’m hella grateful for.
Writing this song on ukulele cracked something open in me.
Meeting @dcain201049 and hearing her story gave it even more weight, more responsibility and so much life.
This project became about listening, about honoring lived experience, about letting truth lead the art.
As we wrap Black History Month, while knowing that BLACK HISTORY IS EVERY DAMN DAY ROUND HERE, hope you sit with this piece.

“Being Black is a Miraculous Thing”
Happy Black History Month.
I wanted to begin this month with a visual project centered on my song “Why,” originally written on ukulele as a letter to America from me.
While writing this piece, I met a woman, @dcain201049 , who shared her story with me. After hearing her truth, the weight and power of this song deepened. It became clear that this work needed to be expanded and witnessed.
When @themedicine.show and @ajamuw invited me to create something powerful, I knew this was the moment for a piece like this.
Some of you may have experienced “Why” live at one of my previous shows, and I’m grateful for that shared moment.
Today, I’m proud to intentionally release it at the start of Black History Month.

2 0 2 6 // let me be honest about my 2025. It was a HARD year. I closed a studio, business dwindled, and I never had a need for food, shelter or transportation. Was surrounded by my loved ones, who held me as I cried. Was offered positions and rejected by others. I bonded with my little girl Kara all year. She’s my little musician ❤️🤲 what’s awesome about music is that it’s a team sport. It’s about doing something together en conjunto. So she grabs our little loog guitar and hands it to me, grabs her bongos and we go at it. These moments brought to you by lack of work…. Or is it gain of passing down our family legacy to the next gen? Is it able to be present for Lukas’ transition to middle school. Putting all the effort into applying to some top schools and it required a lot more intentionality than anticipated. I was part of a cohort that forced me to take time to be contemplative and reflective. I’m changing. Things with my family are changing. I continue to walk in faith knowing that what God begins, God is faithful to complete. This month is @qchristianorg I get to worship with my siblings again ❤️❤️🫶🏽🫶🏽 it’s been a weird year but my hope is anchored in faith and love. They sustain me. Thank you creator for all you’ve given and protected me from. I continue to walk in purpose. To a better 2026 ✌🏽
