Meet the artists of 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸 〰️ ᴘᴀᴜʟ ᴋᴜɪᴍᴇᴛ (b. 1984) works with photography, 16mm film, and installations that combine these media. The indivisibility of depicted material and the image's material support is a recurring motif in his practice, as is the tension between formal qualities and narrative possibilities. Modernist building materials such as steel, glass, and tracing paper appear in his work not only as subject matter, but also as malleable material for creating new forms and spaces. Kuimet presents new analogue photographic and filmic works at Kai 📽️ The starting point for these works are his mother’s hand-drawn architectural plans. These drawings are transformed by lens-based looking and its material outputs – the alluring depth of analogue photographic surfaces and the distinctive materiality of 16mm film. On Saturday, March 21st at 2pm, Paul Kuimet will be in conversation with Magnhild Øen Nordahl and curator Anthea Buys at Kai auditorium 💭The talk is in English and included with an exhibition ticket. 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸 is open from March 21 to August 9, 2026.

Meet the artists of 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸 〰️ ᴍᴀɢɴʜɪʟᴅ Øᴇɴ ɴᴏʀᴅᴀʜʟ (b. 1985) is a visual artist based in Bergen, Norway. Her work examines how scientific and technological abstractions shape objects, environments, and perceptions. Through sculpture, she materialises these systems, translating abstract structures into spatial and physical forms. Nordahl’s sculptures explore how objects change through digital and physical transformations 🌀The works in Exploded View consider how these transformations shape our experience of form, function, and meaning. On Saturday, March 21st at 2pm, Magnhild Øen Nordahl will be in conversation with Paul Kuimet and curator Anthea Buys at Kai auditorium 💭The talk is in English and included with an exhibition ticket. This Saturday, May 16th, we will be opening Paul Kuimet’s curated film program with a very special guest. Following the screening of Aki Kaurismäki’s film “The Other Side of Hope,” there will be a post-screening talk and Q&A with cinematographer Timo Salminen, whose lens has shaped the entire visual world of Kaurismäki. Their collaboration began in 1983 with "Crime and Punishment" and has since grown into one of the most enduring partnerships in contemporary cinema. Salminen has also worked with Mika Kaurismäki and shot Andres Puustusmaa’s “Rat Trap.” Don't miss this rare opportunity to meet the man behind the camera. This week, we are screening a documentary about equality and launching artist Paul Kuimet’s film program. 🎥 ‘Femocracy’ is a documentary by Torsten Körner that tells the little-known story of German women who have fought for their place in politics since the 1950s. The film makes extensive use of archival footage from parliamentary sessions, speeches given by women, and the reactions of men to them. How much strength does it take to stand up against rigid gender roles? The screening takes place in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut.
🗓️ Screening on 14 May at 18:00
🎟️ The screening is FREE, but we kindly ask you to reserve your seat via Fienta. This weekend, we are launching a film programme curated by artist Paul Kuimet, created in dialogue with the exhibition ‘Exploded View’. All screenings begin with an introduction by the artist. A limited number of passes for the full program are also available. 🎥 Artist’s Selection at Kai Cinema: ‘The Other Side of Hope’. Paul Kuimet’s special program opens with a film by legendary Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki, telling the story of a Finnish shirt salesman and a Syrian refugee whose chance encounter changes both of their lives. In Kaurismäki’s signature style, dry humour, melancholy, and human warmth intertwine throughout the film. It invites viewers to reflect on how people can become each other’s last lifeline when the world around them is falling apart.
🗓️ Screening on 16 May at 18:00
🎟️ Admission with exhibition ticket. 🎥 Artist’s Selection at Kai Cinema: ‘Fragments: Artists’ Short Films’ is a special screening dedicated to short films, bringing together five international artist films. The selection weaves together intimate archives, poetic spatial experiences, and shifts in documentary form, inviting viewers to notice the fragments that make up a layered whole. The screening offers an opportunity to experience the short format as an independent artistic medium.
🗓️ Screening on 17 May at 18:00
🎟️ Admission with exhibition ticket. 🎟️ Additional information and tickets: kai.kinosoprus.ee

This weekend Kai cinema has two screenings that are English friendly. Come and enjoy short forms by new Estonian filmmakers or the brilliance of legendary director Jim Jarmusch. 🎥 ’Fire Beneath the Ashes’ is a collection of short films by local filmmakers. It spends an evening in a cheap hotel, walks to and from work in a small town weighed down by everyday worries, strips bare in a smoke sauna in Old Võromaa, sheds light on the darker side of family relationships in an Indian slum, and finally listens to radio hits in a 19th-century farmhouse. If you want to know what’s happening in Estonian film scene right now, this is a perfect opportunity to find out!
🗓️ Screening on May 9 at 6:30 PM 🎥 ’Father Mother Sister Brother’ reflects on the relationships between children and parents — on closeness, or the lack of it, and on how well we truly know one another. It is Jim Jarmusch’s new film, which won the Golden Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival. The film has the tenderness and subtlety of a Mozart chamber piece, while still leaving room for humor.
🗓️ Screening on May 10 at 4:00 PM 🎟️ Additional information and tickets: kai.kinosoprus.ee

𝐻𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑒𝑟 🧐 While working on her PhD 𝑈𝑛𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐴𝑏𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 (2023), Magnhild Øen Nordahl looked into DIY culture and instructional videos shared in maker communities around the world. 🤝 She invited three online content creators to make YouTube tutorials showing how anyone can create their own versions of her three Holder sculptures. 🪜 These holders are practical objects from Magnhild’s studio, used for everyday materials like masking tape and colour samples in wood and metal. 💭 At the same time their form and appearance go beyond just being useful. In the exhibition, they become more than storage: forms to look at, use, rearrange and rethink.
