An Irish tragedy: The fall of Ferdiad at the hands of CĂș Chulainn. Two great warriors, foster brothers, who trained together under the tutelage of the legendary warrior ScĂĄthach.
In Scottish Gaelic, it's said that: Is caomh le fear a charaid, ach 's e smior a chridhe a cho-dhalt. ~ Dear is a kinsman, but the pith of the heart is a foster-brother.
CĂș Chulainn's lament after the battle: "What availeth me to arise, now that my friend is fallen by my hand? For when we were with ScĂĄth, Mother of great gifts, we vowed to each other that for ever and for ever we should do no ill to each other. And now alas! by my hand hast thou fallen ... would that I had died instead of thee, for then I should not now be alive to mourn thy death. Brief and sorrowful will be my life after thee."

đŠâ⏠The Little Bookroom cannot wait to host the launch of 'The Boy Maeve', Kai Ash's (@kaiashwrites ) debut YA novel đŠââŹ
đ« THURSDAY 4th June, 6pm đ«
Join us as we get to hear from Kai Ash in conversation with Margi Brown Ash about how the book came to be and draw out the strong themes of family.
About the book:
Itâs 2002, and fourteen-year-old Maeve â an adopted, closeted trans boy â is facing another lonely year at school. At least heâs got Jeremy, his lifelong imaginary friend, for company. But even Jeremy, in all their wild wisdom, canât explain the weird things that are happening to Maeve.
Like why Maeveâs hair spontaneously changes colour overnight. Or how Maeve knows his granny Beattie is dead, long before anyone can confirm it. Or why a strangerâs voice sounds uncannily familiar âŠ
Perfect for YA readers who love:
đŠâ⏠Queer stories exploring identity and coming out
đŠâ⏠Immersive spec-fic and Gaelic mythology
đŠâ⏠Own-voices LGBTQI+ novels
đŠâ⏠Stories about adoptive and biological families
đŠâ⏠Juicy fiction to discuss in book clubs and classrooms
