Bassist Rio Kai has won awards for his musicality and is a centre piece in London’s Jazz scene. He’s worked on projects such as Seed, The Benet McLean Quintet and Stratos as well as collaborating with artist like Courtney Pine and Zara McFarlane.

We’re welcoming Rio back to the stage at Natural Jazz. Rio is an award winning bassist who performs regularly across London alongside artists such as Courtney Pine, and Zara McFarlane. As well as featuring as a band leader and sideman in several projects including seed, the Benet McLean Quintet, Stratos and more.

Another year older and another year wiser they say (As of yesterday that is!) Thank you for all the birthday wishes - it’s been a interesting few years with its ups and downs, but I’m very grateful for the experiences, connections and opportunities I’ve been lucky enough to encounter. I never imagined I’d have a career in music when I was younger but I’m happy that things have gone in this direction and for the people I’ve been able to meet, learn from and play with. Also for the connections with people that have been forged and the places I have been able to travel to. Here’s to many more as well! ✨

Today is an auspicious day - 10 years ago today I “officially” started playing double bass (This was the day I borrowed a bass from my mentor and friend, Vidal Montgomery). It’s been a crazy journey but I’ve been blessed to meet and play with so many wonderful musicians, travel to so many different places and try and forge a life sowing what I love.
Today is also the day I welcome a new bass into the family; a very quirky one! It’s one of the basses Selmer imported and labelled under their name back in the day and was lovingly repaired by @laurencedixonbassplace - looking forward to gigging this around town! It’s also incredibly small - for reference to the left of the 2nd picture is a Yamaha SLB100 and in the back is a 4/4 cello. Let the music continue

End of an era! It’s surreal to think that since July ‘22 I’ve had the pleasure of MDing The Tempest at @the_globe and the season is done now. I’ve had some amazing times with @olivia_petryszak@tettehvibes@magnus_liminal@midorijaeger@danbradleypercussion@myrabrownbridge@zosia_music & @ashleyblasse on the musicians gallery, massive shout out to the cast and crew of The Tempest, composer @cassiekinoshi , the music department, The Swan for all the ginger beer and especially Egg the cutest dog! Looking forward to returning one day!
