Thursday, February 19 @ 7.30 PM
Pianist/composer Kade Brown, from the Far South Coast of New South Wales, has become a mainstay Melbourne jazz scene, known for his flair for improvisation and versatility in both traditional and contemporary jazz forms.
After returning from Berlin, where he was based while touring extensively throughout Europe in 2023 and 2024, Kade has been composing and performing new music for quartet ahead of recording a new album. Since first forming the band with saxophonist Julien Wilson in 2015, the band has taken many shapes and forms, and always with a focus on the Australian jazz sound, inspired by artists such as Bernie McGann, Allan Browne, Andrea Keller and Mike Nock.
In 2018, Kade recorded his live sextet album Frictions—featuring both Julien and Sam, as well as Carl Morgan (guitar), Alex Hirlian (drums), and French trumpeter Arno de Casanove. The five-part suite, inspired by the natural beauty of the Sapphire Coast where Kade grew up, was awarded the Allan Zavod Composition Prize. Other projects include work with artists such as Ina Forsman (DE), The David Hermlin Orchestra (DE), Lucie Thorne, Holly Moore, Ben Finnis, and Brian Campeau. Kade will be performing new music that will appear on his next album, joined by Julien Wilson on tenor saxophone, Sam Anning on double bass and James McLean on drums.

Doing my best @craigfermanis impression this weekend with The Four Scoops !! On Friday we are playing in my hometown at the Candelo pub, then @majorscreekfestival on Saturday and Sunday. This will be my first time playing at the Candelo pub - hopefully the first of many !! Come down if you’re in the area ! **
Beginning as a melting pot of musical styles incorporating early back beat Jazz and RnB, the group has now evolved to embrace post 50s to 80s Folk, Rock and Americana. The groups repertoire is wide and varied; from Roots Rock groups like The Band to country legend Willie Nelson and acts as diverse as The Police, Ry Cooder, Joe Jackson &
Dave Dobbin.
The Four Scoops are composed of singer & trombonist Ben Gillespie, Jono Brown on double bass & vocals & Mitch Thomas on Drums, and special guest Kade Brown on keyboards.
In addition to performing in a variety of local acts, The Four Scoops members have recorded and performed with many prominent musicians including Gotye, Lauryn Hill, Midnight Oil, Rickie Lee-Jones, Isaac Hayes, Icehouse, Eric Burdon, Mavis Staples and The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
