Living in Red Lodge and working alongside these folks for 2 months reinvigorated my art practice. It's been a tough year for many reasons, and RLCC gave me a space to exhale and get back to craft. So grateful for this experience, focused work time, and to have crossed paths with all these inspiring artists. Pretty unforgettable 🥹☺️. Y'all come visit Chicago sometime ❤️.

Here's a peep at the process from wet clay to lustered eyes and buttons. This diptych is based on moon and coyote folklore. The Moon Goddess and the Space Cowboy figures shimmer with mica mixed into stains! Documenting all the detail is especially difficult when your phone camera is busted, but the pastel glowing effect it created was really beautiful to me.

Farmlands and woods make up the landscape of my family history. I grew up riding horses and watching my mom and grandfather ride in horse shows. These memories gave me so much personal attachment and love for farm animals, wildlife, and of course, western boots. We wore boots to engage with nature and build meaningful relationships with creatures different from us. Though these days, the cowboy boot is really an iconic fashion statement for anyone or any occasion. 🐴👢✨ Which I'm happy to see and love obviously. But,
Cowboy boot history is drenched in blood, and I think about how in today's fashion they exist almost as a ghost of what they once were. Each of my boot sculptures holds different personal memories and references to history and folklore. I make them as a way to remember and honor the moments where humans have cared for eachother, land, and the other creatures we share earth with. But the form of the cowboy boot will always carry the dark side of its cultural history too.

Full moons can be indicative of a completed cycle, a new beginning, heightened emotions, chaos, clarity, balance. I love her in all her forms. She's an ancient marker of time, a modern guardian, a reminder of how small we are, and a ruler of tides and menstruation. When these pieces are lined up in a grid I start seeing them as birth a control pack.
