Work continues in the printmaking department as students carve into massive woodblocks. Senior Allyson Carter (
@juuneally ) and junior Alyssa Cousino (
@ajc_prints ) reflect on the marathon process that culminates in large-scale prints made with heavy construction equipment (modern gas-powered road rollers, not steamrollers even though we throw around the word) using designs created specifically for the event.
The guest visiting artist for the 2026 Road Roller Day is Eric Saline, and this year’s theme is “Home.” In his work, Saline constructs imagined worlds he calls home, shaped in response to the realities of migration and involuntary displacement. Visiting from Sweden, he describes KCAI’s printmaking program as both refreshing and energetic, collaborating with Associate Professor and Chair of Printmaking Miguel Rivera (
@grabador12 ) to help coordinate the large-scale process.
The public is welcome to witness the activity unfolding in front of Vanderslice Hall. The scale of the project and its public setting add an element of mystery, with anticipation building for each reveal. The finished work will be a multi-panel print, with each segment designed to fit together like a puzzle and form a larger composition.
The public is also invited to bring nontraditional items to print on, such as hats, shirts, or even a banana, anything that can hold ink, for an impromptu press by the road roller.
The Kansas City Art Institute extends special thanks to
@herc_rentals and
@speedball_art for directly supporting Road Roller Day 2026 with equipment and materials!
We hope to see everyone there!
