After they spent three days with family, after the dinner on the beach the night before, then the ceremony, dinner, music, dancing, after all that, Erica and Jose Angel danced one last time. Just the two of them. The end of the night and the beginning of something beautiful. I'm so glad I got to make a visual record of it all. @imerica_r @thegalavis

Jenny Lawson aka @thebloggess just might be the funniest person on the planet. She's definitely in the running, and I think she's so great. Here's a picture I took of her in Park City, 2010. So yeah, it's an oldie but it's the most recent one I've got even though I'm posting it right now for a timely reason. Her most recent book just came out and she's touring the country doing lectures and readings and knowing Jenny, probably some mischief. If she comes to your town, do yourself a favor and get yourself to that event. And don't get too worked up about all the swearing. Her new book is: How To Be OK When Nothing Is OK. Brilliant. And you know she is a writer you should be reading because a library in Texas just banned one of her books. A badge of honor. Congratulations on your new book @thebloggess and don't you think it's high time I took your picture again?

Here’s the great Rainn Wilson, photographed for @studioctv and @byutv . (This episode airs April 6) I wanted to avoid asking "Dwight Schrute" questions because I figured that’s all anyone asks him about and one thing I’ve figured out over 25 years of photographing people is how to get past the persona everyone expects. Skipping the talk about beet farming and going right to his book, Soul Boom, well that seemed to shift the energy immediately. I saw him light up when I mentioned I actually wanted to talk about his book, and that shift affected the portrait itself. I’m sharing my entire approach to finding that connection (whether your subject is famous or not) at my upcoming portrait workshop on April 11th. We have a couple seats left for those who want to learn the art of the truthful portrait. Link > bio.

In college I worked in a parking booth in downtown Salt Lake. It was called Firestone Parking and sometimes people would call to see about getting their tires changed, or water. Wrong number, obviously. @br_howell called it The John Wilkes Booth Memorial Booth and I thought that was the funniest thing I'd heard. I always wished I could have done a radio show from the booth and interview people who came to park. This picture is my boss, Patricia, during some of the time I was there. She was strict but fair, and caring, and I always liked working for her. She drove a Lincoln or a Chrysler or whatever car you imagine she drove, you're probably close. And sometimes she'd wear what looked like a little conductor's hat. My favorite thing she said to me was when she called on the phone upset (it was a misunderstanding) and shouted, "Who told Doug he could have a biscuit!" Man, that's a great line any way you slice it. Oh, and I almost forgot my obligatory mention of the upcoming Authentic Portrait Workshop coming real soon where you can up your portrait game sky high. Howdy. That there is a picture of me. Some of you have been following along for a while, and I thank you for that. Others may be wondering what exactly it is I do, and I realized I’ve never really stopped to say. I photograph people. I’ve been doing it for 25 years. For the last 17 years, my office and studio have been tucked inside a 100-year-old building in downtown Provo, Utah. The client work I do includes weddings, family pictures, headshots, portraits of actors and individuals, and sometimes other things that fall under the general category of trying to make honest photographs of human beings. I care less about perfect pictures and more about true pictures. I want a photograph that makes you feel something. The in-between moments. The unscripted ones. The look on someone’s face right before they laugh. The way a couple stands close when they think no one is watching. The quiet moment a cow wandered into the wedding. (That happened.) Or the noisy moment a guy drove his truck through a wedding ceremony on the beach. (That happened.) So, that’s me. I like tacos and laughter, and I’m really glad you’re here. (Also, that picture is a self portrait.)

For a recent interview, I was asked to provide an image or two representing some early work. I sent in this, taken in 1999. Magna, Utah. Man, I've got some stories with this one. 😳
