Funny how this memory popped up today...
Throughout the years I've said Hip Hop was losing originality. Fast forward to now and everybody's asking why rap isn't dominating Billboard the same.
Maybe when everybody chases the same flows, same beats, same trends and same algorithms... eventually everything starts sounding the same.
Hip Hop was built on identity. Regional sound. Perspective. Hunger.
Stop trying to sound like what works and start sounding like YOU.
Word up 💯
"They telling me how to dress, telling me how to act, wishing me the best, saying they got my back..." 🎙️
(taken from Cold Hearted)
Funny how this came from 2022 and somehow still feels current.
Everybody has something to say. Everybody got an opinion. Everybody has a direction they think YOU should go in. They'll tell you how to move, what to do, how to think, and sometimes they'll even disguise it as concern.
But a lot of people aren't speaking from objectivity. They're speaking from their experiences, their fears, their disappointments, their projections, and sometimes their own unhappiness.
So who cares?
Seriously.
The people criticizing you sleep just fine after giving their opinion. The people creating narratives move on with their day. The people judging you usually aren't carrying the weight of what they said... so why should you?
Whether you do the right thing or the wrong thing, somebody's gonna have something to say.
Protect your peace. Protect your energy. Walk out with the same pride you walked in with.
Keep on keeping on 💯
14 years ago today I dropped ‘The King of Queens.’
Different era. Back when mixtapes were burned to CDs, blogs mattered, and every freestyle felt like a statement.
14 years later and I still rap like I got something to prove. 👑
Social media changed the way people look at basic behavior.
Answering the phone became impressive.
Showing up on time became rare.
Keeping your word became a “green flag.”
Loyalty became something people act shocked by.
Somewhere along the line, consistency stopped being expected and started being celebrated like it was exceptional.
That’s the part that’s crazy to me.
A lot of the things people call rare today used to just be standard character traits.
We lowered the bar so much that normal behavior now looks elite.
Character became a flex because accountability became uncommon.
13 years ago around Mother’s Day weekend I was doing career day at schools, trying to pour into the next generation.
Looking back at these pictures, I realize none of it happens without my mother.
Through every struggle, every lesson, every setback and every win… she helped shape the man standing in front of those classrooms and the man in front of y'all today.
This is also the first Mother’s Day my mother has experienced without her sister in 71 years, so today felt even more important to remind her how far her love, sacrifice and impact truly reached.
Forever grateful. Happy Mother’s Day ❤️
