While so many of us - rightfully - have hard, conflicting feelings about this countryâs #independenceday, Black people have traditionally used this, and other holidays, as opportunity to feast with friends and family. And to celebrate m, contributions theyâve made to this countryâs larger liberties, even when they havenât always extended fully to Black people. We understand, we need it all to make it persist - the joy, the shared space, the stories while reaching over tables and into other plates. So, happy we still have each other day if you do celebrate!

Many of you know @indigoculinaryco as co-creator of Juneteenth Jawnâbut you should also know that it exists to honor the stories of the ancestors who shaped the foodways of West Africa, the Caribbean, and the Southern United States. Foodways were forged in resilience, creativity, and community, often in the face of unimaginable adversity, wielding equally unmatched creativity and courage.
And we know this BECAUSE of our narratives, or stories told over tables, phones, in cars, clubs, wherever we are and have been.
