It’s been a mad month, so much so, that we haven’t had time to tell you that Anthony curated an exhibition @swisscottagelibrary that explored the work of Black Film Collectives in association with @love.camden@thinkcinematic@luxmovingimage@junegivanni and BFI Archives!
For obvious reasons, you cant see it in person anymore (🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♀️) but there will be a virtual tour on Camden’s site in the next few days, as well as online conversations with cultural commentators @jana.sante and @melhoyes

REPOST FROM @simonebrewster_london who spoke with was on our recent webinar! Thank you for joining us Simone
--------------------------------------------------- Yesterday I took part in a panel discussion for @theafricacentre and the June Givanni Film Archive to celebrate the 50 Year Anniversary of the film "You Hide Me". The documentary film by Ghanaian filmmaker, Kwate Nii Owoo is a dramatisation of a visit to the British Museum by two Africans who discover rooms full of boxes containing African art from all over the continent, hidden in the basement. These artifacts were stolen during the capturing of people in Africa for the transatlantic slave trade. The film acts as an exposé of the policies of European colonial regimes which, in establishing their rule, attempted to wipe out all traces of African civilisation, religion, language, and art. It argues that materials collected in Africa and often hidden in the basements of European museums have been used against Africans as well as black people in the Caribbean, Europe, and the USA, making them look down on a rich cultural heritage.
.
We explored the questions, that with so many artifacts of cultural, spiritual and tribal significance still being held outside of Africa, what actions can be taken for their rightful return.

YOU HIDE ME can be streamed on Vimeo, via the link in our bio. In 1970 Ghanaian filmmaker Nii Kwate Owoo gained access to the British Museum to make this short film about the valuable African artefacts held there and make his case for their restitution. 2020 is 50 years since that film was made.
