My final Norms post 🎬 a little personal one today, if you’ll indulge me.
A few years ago, I was feeling quite sad about my relationship to art.
I had big hopes of breaking into screenwriting after Knightman, my thesis film, and it hadn’t happened.
It was exciting work on the SGE Netflix movie as my boss’s assistant and he treated me like an exec and entrusted me with big challenging tasks that have given me so much life experience.
But just by nature of the production’s size, it wasn’t a place where I could express my own individuality.
I also felt like I’d put aside music to make space for my more serious career pursuits in filmmaking and novel-writing.
So the day after the SGE premier, I sat on the beach in Santa Monica and got overcome with this emotion that nobody I’d met on the movie knew the real me.
And I just missed the Tabe days so much, when I could get on stage and be transformed by my band. Find words for my deepest demons and insecurities, and destroy them with the power of friendship.
So I put all these feelings in a song, which is Norms.
Because what I realized back in Brooklyn, freestyling stupid shit with my homies is that true friends love you for who you are — not what you do or even the art you make.
That’s my Frodo vial thing that lights the way as I journey back into the spider’s cave.
Cuz for all the burnout I’ve had, I can’t deny the ambition inside me, that wants to push on in these big quests. To get my YA Tokyo novel published🗼 to get my Knightman feature film made🗡️ work with Soman on his own film/TV projects 🌎 and yeah, see where I can take this music thing🐰
I’m into so many fields, and I don’t know if there’s a way to unify them all.
But maybe if there’s one overarching theme to me as an artist, it’s that I want to create things that make people feel less lonely.
Also, as my hero Kurt Vonnegut once said: “work for a socialist form of government.”
So thank you one last time for your support of Norms, and reading this far.

This song came out of a long friendship between @midi.neutron and I that goes back to middle school, when we were in our first band together 🇯🇵
As we get older, sharing art that truly feels like us, that we love and enjoy unapologetically has become the thing that matters most to us.
It’s easy to get burnt out from adulthood, but experiencing moments like our show on Labor Day @electric.sunshinenyc zap us with love and reminds us why we do this ⚡️
