52 Frames week 20: Meaningful Location . . .
“ Hill Top Beacon ”
Winter Hill is the place I’ve chosen as my meaningful location. It’s distinctive in the Northwest of England as it’s the site of the analogue TV mast that broadcast service to the region until the it became digital some years ago.
For me, when I lived for many years in the south of the country, it was a sight that made me realise I hadn’t got too far left to drive when visiting my family back home.
Now, by somewhat of a coincidence, I live just a walk away from its summit and It’s one of my favourite local places. Over the years, the mast has been joined by mobile masts, but it remains the only one illuminated at night, as a warning to aircraft.
For people who live ‘in the shadow of the hill’ it’s a beacon and important part of the collective psyche. In 1896 it witnessed a mass trespass by local working class people objecting to the wealthy landowner’s plans to restrict access and use the land for private hunting. Working long hours six days a week in mills and factories, the locals absolutely valued their access to nature, as much as we do today.
Even further back in history than that, it’s been home to neolithic people, as remains have been found in several places.
I took several shots including one just before sunset with some lovely pink clouds, but I really wanted to choose one with the lights on (which happens twenty minutes or so after sunset), as that’s the most iconic view, in my opinion, so I went for this blue hour one instead.
