In addition to pottery, my parents collected decorative arts from Ukraine and Poland, where my father grew up. Music and art from this region, particularly Klezmer and Jewish paper crafts, traditional, contemporary and experimental, were all in the background of my childhood home. As an adult, this folk art tradition makes my heart beat a little faster and is a major influence on my work.
This clock/menorah (AKA Chanu-clock) is a pastiche of inspiration from 19th century European synagogue murals, Polish papercuts, the Yiddish theater tradition, and of course, Klezmer music.
